140 Years of Grassroots Sports in Siegen-Weidenau

As late summer settles into the Siegerland region, one of the area's most traditional sports clubs celebrates its summer festival: TuS AdH Weidenau 1885 e.V. On Saturday, September 5, 2026, the club invites everyone to its festival at the Glückauf Kampfbahn in the Siegen district of Weidenau.

A Sports Club with Broad Offerings

Founded in 1885, TuS AdH Weidenau (“Allgemeiner deutscher Hochschulturnerverein” - General German University Gymnastics Club) is one of the oldest sports clubs in Siegerland — 140 years of club history, during which generations of Siegen residents have engaged in sports. Today, the club offers a remarkably wide range of activities: gymnastics, athletics, running training, swimming, tennis, Aikido, volleyball, yoga, functional training, Nordic walking, and rehab sports. Additionally, it has its own fitness room and rehabilitation training facilities.

Summer Festival as a Club Gathering

The Summer Festival on September 5, 2026, is the annual gathering for club members, families, and friends — not a large tourist event, but genuine club culture. At the Glückauf Kampfbahn / Hütten grounds, individual sections will present themselves with hands-on activities: introductory Aikido classes, a volleyball court, a running meet-up, yoga mats, children's movement activities — anyone interested can try out several sports in one day.

New University Sports with the University of Siegen

A special initiative of the club is its cooperation with the University of Siegen for a university sports program — offering courses such as swimming lessons for students. This positions TuS AdH Weidenau as a bridge between club sports and university sports in the region, contributing to a particularly diverse mix of generations at the summer festival.

Glückauf Kampfbahn — The Club's Home Ground

The Glückauf Kampfbahn on Hüttenstraße is the home stadium of TuS AdH Weidenau — a sports facility with a grass pitch, running track, and club building. The name "Glückauf" (meaning "good luck" or "break a leg," a traditional miners' greeting) harks back to the mining and smelting history of the Siegerland region; Weidenau has been an industrial and smelting town for centuries, reflected in the district's coat of arms and the club's name.

Commitment Against Sexualized Violence

The club is part of the Qualitätsbündnis Sport NRW (Quality Alliance Sports NRW), a quality initiative actively working against sexualized and interpersonal violence in sports — a modern commitment that defines the club as a social institution beyond its purely sporting activities.

Siegen-Weidenau in Northern Siegerland

With nearly 27,000 inhabitants, Weidenau is the most populous district of Siegen (the main city of the entire municipality with a good 102,000 inhabitants). The northern district is shaped by the industrial history of Siegerland and the University of Siegen — making it a dense, lively quarter of Siegen with club life, students, and an established resident structure.
