Whisky Culture in the Lower Rhine
The Lower Rhine and whisky – at first glance, they might not seem as compatible as the Lower Rhine and wine. However, the region actually nurtures a small but fine whisky scene, supported by a few specialized dealers. Bührmann Weine in Moers is one of these establishments: a specialist wine retailer with an attached spirits department, which has been regularly hosting whisky tastings for years and has built up a loyal clientele of whisky enthusiasts throughout the lower Lower Rhine and the Ruhr area.
The Autumn Tasting
The Autumn Whisky Tasting is the biggest event in the Bührmann annual calendar. Three days in mid-October – Thursday, Friday, and Saturday – are reserved for several seminar sessions, each featuring 5–8 different whiskies presented with background information, history, and tasting techniques. The focus is on single malts from Scotland (Highland, Speyside, Islay, Campbeltown), Irish Whiskey, occasionally American Bourbon, Japanese whisky, or new bottlings from the World Whisky scene.
Three-Day Rhythm
The distribution over three days allows different target groups to choose their preferred date. Thursday (7–10 PM): usually a special theme or premium tasting with high-quality rarities. This date regularly sells out first. Friday (7–10 PM): second tasting with its own theme. Saturday (4–7 PM): afternoon tasting for relaxed enjoyment with time for discussion and comparison. Each seminar is designed as a closed event with a maximum of 20–30 participants.
What's Different at Bührmann
Unlike the large whisky fairs (Aquavitae, Whisky Spring Berlin, Whisky.de Fair Limburg), the Bührmann tasting is small, focused, and personal. Owner Christian Bührmann moderates himself, the tastings are interactive, questions are answered directly, whiskies can be revisited, and the pace is not that of a mass event. The catering component (included in the price) is classic: small snacks, bread, regional sausage and cheese, fresh juices, and water for palate cleansing.
The Range
Those who participate in the tasting can later purchase a wide selection of the featured whiskies by the bottle in the Bührmann shop. The range includes approximately 200–300 whiskies in various price categories, from entry-level bottles at €30 to limited editions at €800. Collectors appreciate the depth of advice provided by the staff.
Moers and the Lower Rhine
Moers is located on the western edge of the Ruhr area, directly on the Dutch border, with the medieval Moers Castle (now the Grafschaft Museum) and a small, charming old town. Those traveling for the whisky tasting can also extend their weekend with visits to Krefeld, Duisburg, or a walk in the Lower Rhine countryside.
