420,000 Visitors in Bielefeld City Center
The Leineweber-Markt is Bielefeld's most traditional city festival — for five days, the entire city center transforms into a single festival mile. The next edition will take place from June 3rd to 7th, 2026, with an expected 420,000 visitors over the five days. This makes the Leineweber-Markt one of the largest city festivals in North Rhine-Westphalia, comparable to Cranger Kirmes or Düsseldorfer Schützenfest in terms of visitor numbers.
The Name and the Tradition
Bielefeld's Linen History
The name Leineweber-Markt (Linen Weaver Market) refers to Bielefeld's linen weaving tradition, which led the city to economic prosperity in the 19th century. "Schwedische Leinen" (Swedish Linen) — linen woven and finished in Bielefeld — was a global export good. Even though the industry no longer exists in its old form, the term lives on in the city festival. The official symbol of the festival is the Leineweber — a figure symbolizing the traditional craft.
History of the Festival
The Leineweber-Markt dates back to a medieval trade and weekly market. It established itself in its current form as a large city festival in recent decades. Today, it is the most important summer event in the city and the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region.
The Program
Several Stages with Live Music
Spread throughout the city center are several music stages — at Jahnplatz, Klosterplatz, Alter Markt, and in the pedestrian zones. A mix of genres from rock and pop to Schlager, folk, jazz, and even big bands and brass bands — over fifty different acts perform over the five days.
Amusement Rides and Festival Grounds
On the open squares in the city center, there are amusement rides — bumper cars, chain carousel, loop-the-loop, children's carousels, Ferris wheel. Classic Kirmes (funfair) atmosphere, integrated into the city festival.
Arts and Crafts Market
An important part of the festival is the arts and crafts market with regional exhibitors from Ostwestfalen-Lippe — ceramics, woodwork, textiles, jewelry, leather goods, glass art. The arts and crafts are in the tradition of Bielefeld's weaving culture.
Culinary Delights from Around the World
The gastronomic offer is exceptionally diverse: international food trucks, regional Westphalian specialties (Pickert, Pumpernickel, Westphalian ham), beer gardens with regional breweries (Hövels, Krombacher, local breweries from OWL), wine bars, and lemonade stands. Over 100 different food stalls.
Bielefeld as a Festival City
Bielefeld, with over 340,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) and home to Bielefeld University. The city center is relatively compact — only a few minutes' walk from Jahnplatz to Alter Markt and Klosterplatz. This makes the Leineweber-Markt a perfectly walkable city festival: you can go from stage to stage, from stall to stall, without long distances. Bielefeld Marketing, as the organizer, optimizes the festival annually.
OWL as a Region
The Ostwestfalen-Lippe region encompasses the East Westphalian districts from Minden-Lübbecke, Herford, and Bielefeld to Lippe and Höxter. A geographically diverse region with the Teutoburg Forest, the Senne, the Weser Uplands — and with Bielefeld as its urban center. The Leineweber-Markt attracts visitors from the entire region every year.
