About Sommerkino Heringsdorf

For two summer months, the beach in front of the Heringsdorf pier transforms into probably the most spectacular open-air cinema in Northern Germany. Daily family films, blockbusters, and classics are shown on a roughly 30 m² LED video wall – the sound is transmitted via wireless radio headphones. Over 200 seats under the open sky, three screenings daily at 2:00 PM, 4:30 PM, and 8:00 PM, films are shown even in light rain. An unusual combination of beach, sea, and film experience in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Cinema by the Water, Sound in Your Ear

The Sommerkino Heringsdorf is one of Germany's most original outdoor cinema concepts. Instead of sitting in a hall, visitors sit in an area with a roughly 30 m² LED video wall directly on the Baltic Sea beach in front of the historic Heringsdorf pier. The sound is transmitted to the audience via wireless radio headphones – this creates an intimate cinema experience without noise pollution for the surrounding hotels and residents, despite the beach setting.

Daily Program in Three Screenings

A diverse program runs daily for two summer months. 2:00 PM is children's time – animated films and family comedies are on the schedule. 4:30 PM usually features comedies and light entertainment. The 8:00 PM screening presents current blockbusters, dramas, or classics of German and international cinema. The seasonal schedule is updated weekly and published on pretix.eu and the festival website.

An LED Wall Like a Ship

The roughly 30 m² LED video wall is perched directly in the sea in front of the pier, rising from the water like a metallic bow. The image is razor-sharp even in direct sunlight – unlike projector-based open-air cinemas that rely on darkness. This makes daytime screenings possible. Screenings are cancelled in case of very bad weather (storms); light rain does not stop the enjoyment of the film – the audience sits under umbrellas or in rain gear they brought themselves.

Radio Headphones and Cinema Comfort

The acoustic trick: Each visitor receives wireless radio headphones upon entry (for a 10 EUR deposit, refunded upon return). Distribution begins 30 to 60 minutes before the film starts. Over 200 seats are available, popcorn, nachos, and drinks are available on site. Arriving early is recommended – the best seats go quickly.

Connected to Heringsdorf — the Imperial Spa Town

Heringsdorf is one of the three Kaiserbäder (Imperial Spa Towns) on the island of Usedom (along with Ahlbeck and Bansin) in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The historic pier – Germany's longest at 508 meters – forms the striking backdrop for the summer cinema. The organizer is Kaiserbäder Tourismus Service GmbH, which integrates the cinema as a seasonal crowd-puller into the event program of the spa towns.

Sommerkino Heringsdorf — edition 2026

For two summer months, Sommerkino Heringsdorf offers three daily screenings on the beach in front of the pier. Family films, comedies, and blockbusters on a 30m² LED screen in the middle of the sea — sound via wireless radio headphones, over 200 seats under the open sky.

Two Months of Beach Cinema

From July 6th to September 6th, 2026, the beach in front of the Heringsdorf pier will once again transform into an open-air cinema. Three screenings daily: 2:00 PM (children's films), 4:30 PM (light comedies), and 8:00 PM (blockbusters and classics).

Technology and Comfort

The LED screen with approx. 30 m² image area offers high-contrast images even in sunlight. The sound is transmitted via radio headphones — 30 to 60 minutes before the film starts, the headphones are handed out at the ticket booth. Seating and snack service directly on the beach.

Weather

Light rain does not interrupt screenings. Only in case of storms will it be cancelled — the current weather situation is communicated on the website.
