One of the Largest Christmas Markets in NRW

With over 110 wooden stalls spread across four central squares in Bielefeld's city center, the Bielefeld Christmas Market is among the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia. While Cologne and Düsseldorf attract mass audiences with their markets, Bielefeld offers a different mix: the Ostwestfalen mentality, a dense market layout in a historically grown city center, and four squares, each with its own thematic focus.

The market opens on Thursday, November 19, 2026, and runs until Wednesday, December 30, 2026, inclusive. Closed: November 22 (Totensonntag - Sunday of the Dead) and December 24–26 (Christmas). This makes the market one of the longest Advent events in the region — the market remains open even between Christmas and New Year's, ideal for the quiet period after the holidays.

Four Squares, Four Accents

Alter Markt

The historic Alter Markt in the old town is the centerpiece. The largest part of the wooden stalls is concentrated here — mulled wine, gingerbread, candied almonds, traditional Christmas decorations, and regional specialties from Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

Jahnplatz — NRW's Largest Christmas Pyramid

At Jahnplatz stands the largest Christmas pyramid in North Rhine-Westphalia. Exclusive room reservations are possible inside the pyramid for groups (Nov 19–Dec 30, 2026) — an extraordinary location for Christmas parties and corporate events. Around the pyramid, there are further stalls with culinary offerings.

Altstädter Kirchplatz — St. Nicholas House

On Altstädter Kirchplatz, a rustic St. Nicholas House dominates, which is particularly attractive to families. Encounters with St. Nicholas on scheduled dates, child-friendly program.

Klosterplatz — Eisstockschießen

At Klosterplatz, Bielefeld Marketing sets up an ice stock rink — a popular Swiss/Bavarian game that has become established at German Christmas markets in recent years. Rental fees for rink times allow groups and families to book their own slots.

The market is organized by Bielefeld Marketing GmbH — the city's marketing company. The application process for stall space is transparently regulated: applications were possible online from January 5 to March 1, 2026. This professionalization ensures a balanced selection of exhibitors, from established market vendors to local artisans.

The Christmas market has been the city's largest Advent event for years, attracting thousands of visitors daily on average — both from the Bielefeld surrounding area and from neighboring cities like Gütersloh, Herford, Detmold.
