Bielefeld's largest intercultural city festival with carnival parade — Motto 2026: “Colorful Morning”
While the Rhineland's carnival strongholds celebrate their carnival in February and the Sauerland region in May, Bielefeld has developed its very own summer carnival: the Carnival of Cultures in mid-June. What began as a small idea in 2001 — that Bielefeld's cultures (one of Germany's most international cities with over 150 nations) should have a joint festival — has become, in its 26th edition, a city festival that fills the entire city center for a day. Unlike traditional carnival, Bielefeld's Carnival does not stem from Christian tradition but from the desire for intercultural encounters in a city shaped by migration like few others in Germany.
Each edition is under a motto that serves as both a cultural statement and a design principle. “Colorful Morning” for 2026 plays on the double meaning: “Morgen” as time (the future) and “Morgen” as time of day (the early morning). The idea: A colorful, open future begins in the bright morning — and specifically this afternoon, when the people of Bielefeld from all nations meet on the festival mile.
The daily schedule is clearly structured:
Bielefeld is among the most international cities in Germany with residents from over 150 nations. The Carnival of Cultures is the annual visualization of this diversity: Turkish, Kurdish, Arab, African, Latin American, Eastern and Southeastern European communities present themselves here — not in an additive list, but as a joint celebration for the entire city. Bielefeld residents without a migration background are invited — and come in large numbers. This is the true secret to the Carnival's success: it doesn't function as an ethnic special event but as a city festival that excludes no one.
The most visually impressive moment is the parade starting at 3 PM. Brazilian samba schools, Turkish drum ensembles, African dance groups with elaborate costumes, floats from various city districts — a visual and acoustic explosion. Those who want to take photos should position themselves early (from 2:30 PM) along Schlosshofstraße or at the transition to Niederwall.
After the parade, the Niederwall transforms into the main stage mile. Various stages with live bands from around the world — from Cuban salsa and Ethiopian funk to Turkish rap. Food stalls with cuisines from all continents: couscous, curry, tacos, pho, empanadas. The program runs until 10 PM — after that, the stages are dismantled, and the people of Bielefeld head to the pubs to continue the evening.
The 26th edition is dedicated to the future (“Colorful Morning”) and once again brings together Bielefeld's over 150 nations in a joint celebration. The tradition, which has grown since 2001, continues — intercultural visibility as a city festival that reaches the entire Bielefeld community.
Free admission. Food and drinks at food stalls (€4–€10 for international specialties).
By car: A2 exit Bielefeld-Zentrum, follow signs for Innenstadt (city center). Parking garages at the main train station or Boulevard. By train: Bielefeld Hauptbahnhof (main station), then a 10-minute walk to the city center.
Free. Food and drinks at the food stalls are subject to charge (typical city festival prices, international specialties €4–€10).
Secure a spot along Schlosshofstraße for the parade starting at 2:30 PM — the visual highlight. Families with small children can also experience the parade from a seated spot in a café along the Niederwall. For the festival mile in the evening: bring plenty of cash in small bills for the food stalls.
