Hocketse — the Swabian form of summer festival
Empfingen is a municipality with around 3,700 inhabitants in the Freudenstadt district (state of Baden-Württemberg, Black Forest). A Hocketse (sometimes also Hocketze) is the typical Swabian form of an open-air summer festival: people sit sociably together under the open sky, eat, drink, and listen to live music. It's not a ticketed mass event, but a neighborly gathering, often organized by a local association.
Musikverein Empfingen since 1847
The Musikverein Empfingen is one of the oldest and most venerable music associations in the region: Since 1847, the association has been playing brass music in the surrounding areas of Hechingen and Horb. With over 175 years, it is one of the veterans of club life in Baden and Württemberg and regularly performs at ring meetings, competitions, and music festivals throughout Southern Germany. The Weiherplatzhocketse is the association's annual major event — a dress rehearsal and showcase at the same time.
The Weiherplatz and the Musikerheim
The venue for the Hocketse is the Musikerheim on Weiherplatz in Empfingen, a club house with an adjacent outdoor area that transforms into a festival ground once a year. Benches and tables are set up, an open stage is erected, and catering stands are put up. The atmosphere is deliberately Swabian-cozy — not a show stage with a grand spectacle, but a three-day festival where guests can sit on the benches and listen to the music.
Program — Brass music and more
Over the three festival days, the main band of Musikverein Empfingen plays in several sets, complemented by guest bands from the region (friendly music associations from the Freudenstadt and Zollernalb districts) and usually a modern party band on Saturday evening for the younger audience. Sunday is traditionally dedicated to the 'Frühschoppen' (morning pint) and family day. The association's youth band often performs on Sundays.
Culinary Delights
At the association's stands, you'll find classic Hocketse offerings: Swabian Maultaschen, grilled bratwurst, schnitzel with potato salad, fries, chicken, cakes, and pies in the afternoon. Served with draft beer, Württemberg wine, apple spritzer, and coffee — the members of the association provide the catering on a voluntary basis.

The 2026 Weiherplatzhocketse follows the proven three-day format: On Friday, June 13, 2026, Musikverein Empfingen opens the festival at the Musikerheim from the late afternoon onwards — benches and catering stands are ready, and the main band plays to kick things off. Saturday and Sunday feature full festival days with performances by friendly music associations from the Freudenstadt and Zollernalb districts, a party band on Saturday evening, and 'Frühschoppen' on Sunday morning.

Getting There
Empfingen is located on the A 81 (Empfingen exit, directly on the motorway) as well as on the B 14. By train: Empfingen station on the Eutingen–Hechingen line (Hohenzollerische Landesbahn), about a 10-minute walk to the Musikerheim. Parking available at the Musikerheim and in the town center.
Opening Hours
Festival begins Friday evening, Saturday all day with stage program until late at night, Sunday with 'Frühschoppen' and festival closing in the late afternoon.

Free admission to the festival grounds. Food and drinks at festival prices, proceeds go to the association's work and youth training of Musikverein Empfingen.
