Thuringia's largest cheese market — on the first Sunday of September at the Open Air Museum
At the Thuringian Cheese and Delicacies Market in Hohenfelden, in the Weimarer Land district of the state of Thuringia, farm dairies and small manufacturers from all regions of the Free State present themselves. You can take your time to taste, compare, and talk to the producers — who makes the best raw milk semi-hard cheese, who makes the most intense goat cheese, who maintains the oldest cheese cellar? The cheese selection is complemented by a wide range of Thuringian delicacies: homemade sausages, ham, homemade liqueurs, farmhouse bread, honey from beekeepers, and handmade ice cream.
The Hohenfelden Open Air Museum preserves around 35 historical buildings from all over Thuringia, which have been faithfully reconstructed on the museum grounds near the Hohenfelden reservoir since the 1970s. During the cheese market, all farmsteads, workshops, and mills are open — you can immerse yourself in the historical rooms between the market stalls, watch the baker at the wood-fired oven, or visit the farm garden. This combination of culinary delights and a museum visit makes the market a family experience.
The Thuringian Cheese Market is organized by the Friends of the Open Air Museum together with Thuringian dairies. The idea: to create a platform for the small farm dairies in the state that are hardly visible in retail. Today, the market is considered the most important meeting point for the Thuringian cheese scene and attracts several thousand visitors every year. The 16th edition in 2026 marks a quarter of a century of commitment to regional food culture.
In addition to the around 30 cheese and delicacy stalls, there is a culinary supporting program: cheese seminars, lectures on dairy farming, tastings with explanations from the cheesemakers, and a small stage program with Thuringian folk music. For children, hands-on activities related to the farm and animals are offered. The atmosphere is familial, regionally rooted, without tourist hustle and bustle — a typical Thuringian market day.
On the first Sunday of September, the Hohenfelden Open Air Museum opens its gates for the 16th Thuringian Cheese Market. Farm dairies from all regions of Thuringia come to Weimarer Land with their fresh products. The cheese selection is complemented by delicacy stalls offering homemade bread, sausage, honey, and liqueur.
During the market, all historical buildings of the museum are open — you can slip into the old rooms between the stalls, experience craft demonstrations, and spend a whole day at the museum.
The exact list of participating dairies will be published shortly before the event at freilichtmuseum-hohenfelden.de.
The market is included in the regular museum admission — no special surcharges. Current prices at freilichtmuseum-hohenfelden.de.
