About Thuringian Cheese Market Hohenfelden

The Thuringian Cheese and Delicacies Market transforms the Thuringian Open Air Museum Hohenfelden in Weimarer Land into a large marketplace for handmade cheese from the region every year on the first Sunday in September. Farm dairies from all parts of Thuringia — from Eichsfeld to Vogtland — present their specialties made from cow, goat, sheep, and even buffalo milk. The market is framed by the historical village ensemble of the open-air museum with its half-timbered houses, mills, and farm gardens — an atmospheric setting that makes the cheese market one of the most popular culinary dates in the Thuringian festival calendar.

Cheese Craftsmanship from All Over Thuringia

At the Thuringian Cheese and Delicacies Market in Hohenfelden, in the Weimarer Land district of the state of Thuringia, farm dairies and small manufacturers from all regions of the Free State present themselves. You can take your time to taste, compare, and talk to the producers — who makes the best raw milk semi-hard cheese, who makes the most intense goat cheese, who maintains the oldest cheese cellar? The cheese selection is complemented by a wide range of Thuringian delicacies: homemade sausages, ham, homemade liqueurs, farmhouse bread, honey from beekeepers, and handmade ice cream.

The Setting — Thuringia's Largest Open Air Museum

The Hohenfelden Open Air Museum preserves around 35 historical buildings from all over Thuringia, which have been faithfully reconstructed on the museum grounds near the Hohenfelden reservoir since the 1970s. During the cheese market, all farmsteads, workshops, and mills are open — you can immerse yourself in the historical rooms between the market stalls, watch the baker at the wood-fired oven, or visit the farm garden. This combination of culinary delights and a museum visit makes the market a family experience.

Tradition Since 2010

The Thuringian Cheese Market is organized by the Friends of the Open Air Museum together with Thuringian dairies. The idea: to create a platform for the small farm dairies in the state that are hardly visible in retail. Today, the market is considered the most important meeting point for the Thuringian cheese scene and attracts several thousand visitors every year. The 16th edition in 2026 marks a quarter of a century of commitment to regional food culture.

Atmosphere and Accompanying Program

In addition to the around 30 cheese and delicacy stalls, there is a culinary supporting program: cheese seminars, lectures on dairy farming, tastings with explanations from the cheesemakers, and a small stage program with Thuringian folk music. For children, hands-on activities related to the farm and animals are offered. The atmosphere is familial, regionally rooted, without tourist hustle and bustle — a typical Thuringian market day.
