Medieval spectacle with knights, the dragon 'Fangdorn', sword fights and fire riding show — Easter 2026 at the Niederburg
When the Niederburg Kranichfeld awakens at Easter, history becomes a spectacle. From Holy Saturday to Easter Monday — April 4th to 6th, 2026 — over a hundred medieval performers, craftsmen, and musicians transform the historic castle in the Weimarer Land district into a late medieval venue. Sword fights, falconry, archery, stonemasonry, and live music from the period between 1200 and 1500 — all take place against the backdrop of the castle walls.
The most spectacular element is the dragon 'Fangdorn': an almost four-meter-high and twelve-meter-long dragon made of steel and fabric, which breathes fire and fills the castle with fear with its mighty roars. First used in 2022, Fangdorn has now become the festival's trademark — children and adults alike gather before each show. Knights and squires reenact the dragon fights live around it.
The daily schedule follows a fixed rhythm: 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM feature the sword fights — tournaments and show combats with historically accurate weapons and armor. At 3:00 PM daily, a falconer presents the falconry flight show with eagles, vultures, owls, and falcons — birds fly just over the spectators' heads, a breathtaking demonstration. The highlight is the fire riding show on Saturday evening: riders and horses, both equipped with fire, gallop through the courtyard — an almost mystical staging.
Dozens of craftsmen demonstrate their skills on the castle grounds: stonemasons work on sandstone blocks, leatherworkers craft belts and pouches, blacksmiths pull glowing iron from the furnaces, bow makers explain the construction of historical bows, cooks prepare food over open fires. Several music groups — from bagpipe ensembles to medieval drum groups — alternate throughout the days, shaping the acoustic atmosphere.
The festival rewards visitors dressed in medieval attire with a significantly reduced rate: those arriving in period costume (tunic, bodice, laced dress, leather cap) pay €9.50 instead of €15. This also makes the festival attractive to active reenactor communities and ensures an impressive atmosphere — many visitors wear historical clothing, greatly enhancing the authenticity of the spectacle.
The Niederburg Kranichfeld dates back to the 12th century and is one of Thuringia's best-preserved castle complexes. Address: Schloßgasse 18, 99448 Kranichfeld. The castle is located directly on the banks of the Ilm river, easily accessible on foot from the Kranichfeld train station. The historic walls and courtyard form a perfect natural backdrop, offering an ideal stage for a medieval spectacle.
From April 4th to 6th, 2026, the Niederburg Kranichfeld will be the stage for a medieval spectacle over three days. Knights and squires will fight, falconers will present their birds, a dragon will breathe fire — and on Saturday evening, fire riders will gallop through the courtyard.
The daily rhythm is set: sword fights at 1:00 PM and 4:30 PM, falconry flight show at 3:00 PM. The fire riding show is a Saturday evening highlight. In between, the market runs, musicians play, and craftsmen work.
Adults €15; Family A (2 adults + unlimited children) €35; Family B (1 adult + unlimited children) €20; visitors in medieval attire €9.50. Tickets on-site at the castle box office.
