Folk-Metal and Medieval Rock Festival at Niederburg Kranichfeld
The Sternenklang Festival is one of the most charming Folk-Metal and Medieval Rock festivals in Central Germany. The venue is the Niederburg Kranichfeld — a medieval castle complex overlooking the Ilm valley in the Weimarer Land district, about 25 kilometers south of Weimar. The castle's setting, with its keep, walls, and courtyard, forms the stage backdrop for three days of festival fun centered around Folk-Metal, Medieval Rock, and medieval life.
The headliners for 2026 are Subway to Sally (a German Medieval Rock institution from Potsdam) and Korpiklaani (a Finnish Folk-Metal band). Also confirmed are Ad Infinitum, Grailknights, Blackbriar, Vogelfrey, Tabernis, Grimming, Kaspar und die Anderen, Robse, and Katerfahrt. More acts are yet to be announced (“TBA”). Tickets for 2026 are already sold out (as of Spring 2026).
In addition to the concerts, the festival features a medieval market with camp life and craft demonstrations, historical combat displays by knight and mercenary groups, archery, blacksmithing demonstrations, and a grand fire show late in the evening — the program captures the atmosphere of a classic medieval market combined with a modern rock stage.
The town of Kranichfeld (around 3,500 inhabitants) is located in the Weimarer Land district in the state of Thuringia. The Niederburg is one of the region's defining structures — alongside the Oberburg Kranichfeld, the castle museum, and a dense network of hiking trails in the Ilm valley. Visitors attending the festival can easily combine their festival days with a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Weimar (25 km away) or a hike along the Ilm Valley Cycle Path.
The Sternenklang Festival 2026 transforms Niederburg Kranichfeld into an open-air stage with a medieval market from June 11th to 13th, 2026. The castle's setting, with its keep and walls, serves as the main stage — throughout the festival weekend, Folk-Metal and Medieval Rock bands from Germany, Finland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands will perform.
With Subway to Sally and Korpiklaani, two of the genre's most renowned bands will grace the stage. Subway to Sally's performances are known for their grand stage shows — pyrotechnics, choreography, and classic pieces from the repertoire of the Medieval Rock pioneers. Korpiklaani brings the Finnish Folk-Metal experience to Kranichfeld with violin and accordion. Other confirmed bands include Ad Infinitum, Grailknights, Blackbriar, Vogelfrey, Tabernis, Grimming, Kaspar und die Anderen, Robse, and Katerfahrt.
In addition to the concerts, there will be a medieval market with camp life, historical combat displays by local knight and mercenary groups, archery, and blacksmithing demonstrations. A grand fire show on the castle grounds will conclude each day.
