Six days of roses, gardens, and island culture in the North Frisian Wadden Sea
The Pellworm Rose and Garden Days are among the most charming garden festivals on the German North Sea coast. The venue is the North Sea island of Pellworm in the North Frisia district—an island in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park (UNESCO World Heritage) that shapes its own way of life with its thatched-roof houses, salt marshes, and dikes. For six days, everything revolves around roses, perennials, island garden culture, and what thrives in the North Frisian climate between wind, salt, and long summer light.
The days begin with a Rose and Garden Market at Kaydeich around the Bürgerhus. Traders from the mainland and local artisans present their products, alongside regional culinary offerings (Friesentorte, island rose specialties) and live music. On the following days, private gardens on the island open their gates—a rare opportunity to glimpse the lovingly designed gardens of the islanders. Workshops, expert lectures, and nature tours round off the program.
Pellworm has developed into a kind of "Rose Island" in recent years—rose varieties specifically bred for the harsh conditions of the Wadden Sea thrive particularly well here. Each edition traditionally crowns a "Rose of the Year", whose presentation is one of the program highlights.
The island of Pellworm in the North Frisia district, state of Schleswig-Holstein, with around 1,000 inhabitants, is one of Germany's quietest North Sea islands. It is reached by ferry from Nordstrand-Strucklahnungshörn (approx. 35-minute crossing). The island has limited car access; it can be easily explored by bike or on foot—perfect for commuting between the open gardens.
The 2026 edition continues the proven concept: an opening market on Sunday, followed by five days of open island gardens and accompanying cultural program. The program ranges from lectures on roses and garden practice workshops to nature tours of the island and culinary offerings from regional providers.
The mix of salty North Sea wind, long June light (it doesn't get dark before 10 PM on Pellworm), and the tranquil island atmosphere makes the garden festival a contemplative experience away from the usual festival hustle.
Presentation of the "Rose of the Year" as a recurring highlight (variety to be announced in advance on pellworm.de).
The detailed daily program with times for individual lectures, workshops, and garden openings will be published by the Pellworm Spa and Tourism Service before the season starts on pellworm.de.
By ferry from Nordstrand-Strucklahnungshörn (Adler-Schiffe / NPDG), approx. 35 minutes. On the island, travel by bike or on foot; some bus lines connect the main settlements (Warften). Car transport is possible but often unnecessary due to the manageable island roads.
Rose and Garden Market at Kaydeich: Free admission. Private gardens and workshops may incur a small fee; program and prices are available on pellworm.de.
Holiday farms, guesthouses, and thatched-roof houses on the island—early booking is recommended due to limited capacity, especially during the summer season.
Combine your visit to the Rose and Garden Days with a mudflat hike or a trip to the lighthouse—the Wadden Sea is a World Heritage site and a must-see on Pellworm.
