Twelve days of autumn on the green Hallig — kite festival, lantern parade, markets, and nature experience
Pellworm is often called the green island of North Frisia — diked, rich pasture land, many sheep, hardly any sand, but mudflats off the coast. While Sylt and Föhr are characterized by masses of tourists in summer, Pellworm has a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere. The Pellworm Autumn Days utilize this mood: twelve days of programming that don't overwhelm the island, but rather focus on Pellworm's special autumn identity.
On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the traditional kite festival will take place: giant kites will be flown in the autumn wind on Pellworm beach, and small kites can be brought along or purchased from vendors. Accompanying this is a small autumn market with café and cake, where families and kite flyers can warm up after the flying activities. A classic family festival format that perfectly captures the special Pellworm atmosphere.
On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the lantern parade will wind its way through one of Pellworm's villages. Homemade lanterns, traditional songs, walking together into the encroaching darkness, followed by hot drinks and soup for all participants. A beautiful traditional event that connects locals and island guests across generations.
Over the twelve days, an accompanying program of readings, craft workshops, hikes with nature guides, theater evenings, and film screenings will take place. Exact dates will be published on pellworm.de in the weeks before the festival. Those staying on the island can take part in several program items spread over the days.
Pellworm belongs to the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and lies in the Wadden Sea off the North Frisian coast. With around 1,150 inhabitants and an area of 37 square kilometers, it is one of the larger Halligen — although Pellworm is strictly speaking not a Hallig, but a diked marsh island. Arrival is by ferry from Nordstrand-Strucklahnungshörn. In autumn, the island has a special charm: fewer tourists, clear air, impressive light play over the Wadden Sea.
The 2026 edition is confirmed on the official event page of the Tourismus-Service Pellworm. As every year, the Autumn Days combine traditional events (kite festival, lantern parade) with nature and educational programs.
The organizer is the Tourismus-Service Pellworm, which puts together the program in collaboration with associations, restaurateurs, artists, and nature guides.

Vacation apartments, guesthouses, and the island's only hotel. Less booked in autumn than in summer — good booking chances even on short notice.
