Germany's largest festival for international stage art
The Theater der Welt festival was founded in 1981 and is held every three years in changing German cities by the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). Zurich, Cologne, Berlin, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Halle, Mülheim, Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt have previously hosted. In 2026, the festival will stop in Chemnitz for the first time – immediately following Chemnitz's role as European Capital of Culture 2025.
The 2026 program will be selected by nine international curators from Argentina, Australia, China, Greece, India, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and South Africa. They will bring 33 productions to Chemnitz that would otherwise rarely come to Germany – including puppet theatre from Indonesia, drama from the Czech Republic, a participatory installation from Australia, and music theatre from India.
Theater der Welt 2026 covers the entire spectrum of contemporary stage art: classic drama, puppet theatre, performance art, shadow theatre, immersive VR experiences, music theatre, and dance productions. The diversity of forms corresponds to the global breadth of the countries of origin – the festival is explicitly designed as a forum for artistic encounters and cultural exchange.
The city of Chemnitz, an independent city in the state of Saxony (AGS 14511), was European Capital of Culture in 2025 along with Aarhus. Theater der Welt 2026 continues the cultural dynamic of the Capital of Culture year. Venues throughout the city – including the Hartmannfabrik – will be used; close cooperation with the Chemnitz theatres, the Festival Academy Brussels, and the Capital of Culture GmbH makes the festival a major project for the entire region.
The Chemnitz edition is directed by Dr. Christoph Dittrich and Stefan Schmidtke. Both stand for a conceptually ambitious program design that understands international theatre not as a showcase, but as a dialogue with the local audience.
This year's edition brings international stage art to Chemnitz that is otherwise rarely seen in Germany. The nine curators from Argentina, Australia, China, Greece, India, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and South Africa have selected productions from their respective theatre scenes – including Indonesian puppet theatre, Czech drama, Australian installations, and Indian music theatre.
The Hartmannfabrik serves as the central festival hub with talks, performances, and the festival box office. Further performances will take place at the Chemnitz theatres and numerous other venues in the city.
Beyond the actual stage program, the festival offers discussions, artist talks, and networking formats – for example, on May 26 at 6 p.m. with Ukrainian author Sofia Andrukhovych and Czech director Dušan David Pařízek on the production «Amadoka».
Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof connects the city with ICE train stops in Leipzig, Dresden, and Hof. The venues are located in the city center and are accessible by tram and on foot.
Tickets are available via the festival website, at the festival box office in the Hartmannfabrik (Sat 10 am–4 pm), and at the respective venues. Program guides are available on-site.
Chemnitz offers a growing range of hotels and guesthouses, significantly expanded in the wake of the 2025 Capital of Culture. Book in advance – the festival weeks are high season.
