Street Art in the Heart of the City
When the late spring sun shines over Chemnitz and the street cafés are open, the HUTFESTIVAL begins — Saxony's largest street art festival. It is organised by C³ Chemnitzer Veranstaltungszentren GmbH, a municipal event organiser with a long tradition. Since its first edition in 2017, the festival has grown annually, from a small local spectacle to an international event with a city festival character and tens of thousands of visitors.
May 29th to 31st, 2026 — 9th Edition
The 9th edition takes place from Friday evening, May 29th, to Sunday evening, May 31st, 2026. It opens on Friday at 5 PM on the Sombrero stage at Neumarkt, the central festival stage. Throughout the weekend, performances are spread across 8 main stages and numerous action areas in the city centre — Markt, Neumarkt, Theaterplatz, Roter Turm, Jakobikirchplatz, and other squares. Opening hours: Friday 5 PM–10 PM, Saturday 1 PM–10 PM, Sunday 1 PM–6 PM.
Artists from 8 Nations
What distinguishes the HUTFESTIVAL from a typical city festival is its artistic quality and international selection. Professional street artists are invited — jugglers, acrobats, clowns, fire artists, walking acts, live bands, performance artists. In 2026, they come from Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Japan. Local Chemnitz ensembles and bands also perform.
Market of Beautiful Things and Street Food
Parallel to the stage programme, there are two themed markets: The "Markt der schönen Dinge" (Market of Beautiful Things) presents handicrafts, designer pieces, jewellery, and fashion by local creatives. The street food area offers international cuisine from around the world — food trucks and stalls with Asian, Latin American, Mediterranean, and German specialities.
Chemnitz, European Capital of Culture 2025 — and the Hutfestival
Chemnitz was the European Capital of Culture in 2025, together with Nova Gorica in Slovenia. This period has sustainably boosted the city's cultural scene. The HUTFESTIVAL is one of the festivals that have helped build Chemnitz's cultural profile: accessible (free admission), family-friendly, international, and non-commercial. In 2026, one year after the Capital of Culture season, the festival will be particularly visible — many visitors come to relive the atmosphere of the Capital of Culture year in the city centre.
