Village gathering in Saarbrücken's smallest district
Eschringen became a district of Saarbrücken in 1974 as part of a municipal reform, but it has retained its village character. With well under 1,000 inhabitants, Eschringen is the smallest of Saarbrücken's 18 districts – surrounded by fields and orchards, on the edge of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau. Its rural profile clearly distinguishes Eschringen from the rest of the urbanised Saarbrücken regional association.
The Eschringer Treff is the annual community festival of the village. Unlike the large folk festivals (Volksfeste) in the region, it is deliberately kept small and personal – an evening event lasting three to four hours where villagers come together, chat, eat, and drink. The event is organised by local clubs, often with live music from a small band or a DJ set.
As is customary in Saarland villages, local clubs handle the catering: 'Schwenker' (grilled meat skewers), 'Lyoner' (a type of sausage), fries, 'Saarschoppen' (local wine), plus coffee and cake. Proceeds remain within the community and fund club activities or village projects. For outsiders, this is a rare opportunity to experience rural Saarbrücken as the locals know it.
Eschringen is located directly on the edge of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO region between Saarbrücken and the Palatinate border. It is characterised by orchards, extensively managed meadows with orchids, and small farm shops. Visitors to the Eschringer Treff often combine it with a hike the following day.
For many Saarbrücken residents, it's a surprise that their state capital has such a rural district. If you want to reconcile urban Saarbrücken with its rural side – Eschringen is the shortest route.
The event is organised by the Eschringen village community in cooperation with local clubs. The format is an evening gathering with catering in the village square – without large stages, but with the aim of making the village life of Saarbrücken's smallest district visible.
The exact musical programme will be announced in advance on eschringen.de and the village community's Facebook page.

Combine the evening gathering with a day trip to the Bliesgau – for example, a hike in Rilchingen-Hanweiler or the 'Auf der Lohe' nature trail. Eschringen is quiet in the evenings, and public transport connections to Saarbrücken-Mitte are limited at night.
