Traditional autumn Kirchweih (church consecration festival) on the Saarland-French border
Kleinblittersdorf is located in the extreme south of the Saarbrücken regional association — the Saar river flows here directly along the French border, and the neighboring town of Großblittersdorf (Grosbliederstroff) lies on French soil. This location has shaped village life for generations: Saarlanders and Lorrainers cross the bridge daily, and many families span the border. The Kirb — the traditional church consecration festival of the main town — is one of the central local festivals that makes this mixed culture visible.
The Kirb in Kleinblittersdorf extends over the long weekend from Friday to Sunday (or from October 2nd to 4th, 2026, with the bridge from the Day of German Unity). Showmen set up carousels, shooting galleries, and candy stalls. Local clubs — the fire department, sports club, music association, carnival club — organize catering with classic Saarland specialties. Schwenkbraten (marinated pork neck), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Crêpes (French-Saarland crossover), and Karlsberg beer characterize the culinary mile.
As with many Saarland Kirmessen (funfairs), Sunday begins with a High Mass in the Catholic parish church, followed by the Frühschoppen with the music association. At lunchtime, the festival tent invites guests for a meal — often with traditional 'Hoorische' (Saarland potato dumplings) or 'Lyonerbrutwurst' (a type of Lyonnaise sausage). In the afternoon, the program is aimed at families with games and children's activities.
What makes the Kirb in Kleinblittersdorf special is its bilingual atmosphere. Many French neighbors from Grosbliederstroff and Sarreguemines come over; in the festival tent, Saarland dialects mix with Lorraine French. This mixed culture is part of Saarland's identity — and nowhere is it more palpable than here on the immediate border.
Those exploring the Saarland by bike can ideally combine the Saarradweg (from Saarbrücken to Sarreguemines/France) with a stop in Kleinblittersdorf during the Kirb. The connection to Saarbrücken via the Saarbahn (light rail) is excellent.
The event is organized by the municipality of Kleinblittersdorf together with local clubs. The detailed daily program will be published on kleinblittersdorf.de before the Kirb.
