A History Since the 14th Century
The Diepholzer Großmarkt is one of the oldest documented folk festivals in Northern Germany. The first mentions date back to the late 14th century, when the market primarily served as a livestock and goods market. Over the centuries, it has evolved but has always remained an economic and social highlight in the Diepholz year. In 2026, the 646th edition will be celebrated – a continuity that is unparalleled.
Huge Festival Grounds with 210 Exhibitors
210 exhibitors are spread across an area of approximately 30,000 square meters. The festival grounds at Rathausmarkt include amusement rides, festival tents, sales stands, the livestock market, and the enjoyment world. Over 90,000 visitors attend annually – an impressive number for a town of Diepholz's size.
Livestock Market as a Historical Component
Despite its modernization, the Diepholzer Großmarkt has retained a special feature: the livestock market. Here, horses, cattle, and other farm animals are presented – a piece of living market tradition that keeps the connection to the region's agriculture visible.
Enjoyment World with Cooking Shows
The enjoyment world covers about 800 square meters and is a relatively new component of the market. Regional and supra-regional providers present culinary specialties here, while cooking shows with well-known chefs provide entertainment and inspiration. Thus, the Großmarkt combines classic folk festival tradition with contemporary culinary culture.
Amusement Rides and Festival Tents
The classic folk festival program is not missing: carousels, roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, and much more are on the festival grounds. Several festival tents offer catering, live music, and dancing, making the Großmarkt a lively meeting point in the evenings as well.
