Traditional season opening of the asparagus town Schrobenhausen with asparagus tapping, Asparagus Queen and family day
Schrobenhausen in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen is considered Bavaria's Asparagus Capital — the Schrobenhausen asparagus region is the most important cultivation area for white asparagus in Bavaria and has its own protected geographical indication. With the traditional asparagus festival, the town opens the asparagus season every year at the end of April — an event that receives attention far beyond the region.
The venue is Lenbachplatz around Schrobenhausen Town Hall — named after the painter Franz von Lenbach (1836-1904), who was born in Schrobenhausen. The historic town center with its parish churches and Baroque buildings provides the festive setting for the season opening festival.
The festival begins at 11:00 AM with the official opening by Mayor Harald Reisner and Claudia Westner, chairwoman of the South Bavarian Asparagus Producers Association. At 11:45 AM, the traditional asparagus tapping takes place — the ceremonial marking of the season's start, where a prominent patron ceremonially presents the first bunch of asparagus. At 12:00 PM, the beer tapping follows with free beer to celebrate the opening. The afternoon (1:00 PM to 4:30 PM) is shaped by the family program with hands-on activities, face painting, balloon animals, game stands, and live music.
The patron of the 2026 Asparagus Festival is the well-known Bavarian Broadcasting moderator Florian Kienast, who will perform the asparagus tapping and also participate in the asparagus peeling competition. The reigning Schrobenhausen Asparagus Queen Franziska I. will accompany the festival — her successor will be crowned on May 10, 2026.
The focus of the festival is, of course, Schrobenhausen asparagus — freshly harvested, prepared in all classic ways and in modern variations. In addition, Austrian specialties (the region maintains traditional ties to Tyrol and Salzburg), Franconian wines, and a beer garden with free beer to start are offered. Several Schrobenhausen restaurants and asparagus farmers also use this occasion to open their own asparagus season.
Admission to the European Asparagus Museum is free on the festival day — the world's only museum dedicated exclusively to the noble vegetable asparagus. The other city museums (Lenbach Museum, Local History Museum) offer reduced admission prices on this day. An ideal opportunity to get to know Schrobenhausen culturally and culinarily in one day.
The Asparagus Festival combines agricultural tradition with a modern festival format: It is a classic seasonal ritual — the agricultural custom of ceremonially presenting the first asparagus — paired with show elements (celebrity competitions, live music, stage program) that make the festival visible regionally and nationally through the media.
The Schrobenhausener Spargelfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, 11:00 AM–4:30 PM, on Lenbachplatz in front of the town hall. The official season opening will be performed by Mayor Harald Reisner and Claudia Westner from the South Bavarian Asparagus Producers Association.
At 11:45 AM, the traditional asparagus tapping will take place at the Bifang in front of the stage. The 2026 patron is the well-known BR moderator Florian Kienast. This will be followed by the reigning Schrobenhausen Asparagus Queen Franziska I. with an autograph session — her successor will be crowned on May 10, 2026. At 12:00 PM, the beer tapping will provide free beer to celebrate the opening. An asparagus peeling competition with celebrity guests will provide entertainment in the late morning.
The afternoon (1:00 PM–4:30 PM) is entirely dedicated to families: hands-on activities, face painting, balloon animals, a play area, performances by the Hohenwarter Musebuam, and a performance by the band Börner at 3:00 PM.
