Traditional Christmas Market on Lenbachplatz in the Upper Bavarian Asparagus Town
Schrobenhausen is a traditional small town in Upper Bavarian Donaumoos (district Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, state of Bavaria). It is known as the "Asparagus Town" — one of the largest contiguous asparagus growing areas in Bavaria is located around the town — and as the birthplace of the painter Franz von Lenbach (1836–1904), the Munich "Painter Prince" of the 19th century. The Lenbachplatz, named after him, in the middle of the old town is the stage for many town festivals, especially the Christkindlmarkt during Advent.
The large decorated Christmas tree on Lenbachplatz forms the visual center of the market. Wooden stalls with mulled wine, apple punch, bratwurst, Magenbrot, gingerbread, roasted almonds, and Schmalznudeln are grouped around it. Stadtmarketing Schrobenhausen eG and local associations share the catering stands, while local artisans sell Advent wreaths, nativity scenes, wood carvings, and textile works.
As is customary at Upper Bavarian Christmas markets, changing performances create the atmosphere: the Stadtkapelle Schrobenhausen, the church choir, school choirs, and wind ensembles play over the market days amidst the mulled wine steam — from Alpine Advent carols to classic Christmas songs.
Lenbachplatz is located in the middle of the old town, within walking distance of Pfaffenhofener Tor and the Schrobenhausen parish church of St. Jakob. The old town is closed to cars during the market, which enhances the quiet, pedestrian-friendly Advent atmosphere.
Stadtmarketing Schrobenhausen eG officially confirms the 2026 Christkindlmarkt on Lenbachplatz. The exact date ("tba December 2026") will be announced soon — the long-standing tradition falls on the 3rd Advent weekend.
Exact timetables and the complete music program will be published by Stadtmarketing Schrobenhausen eG a few weeks before the market.
