Stadtpark Waltrop as a Festival Backdrop
Waltrop lies at the intersection of the Ruhr area and Münsterland, on the edge of the Hohe Mark Nature Park. The Stadtpark, with its old trees, expansive meadows, and small pond, is the town's natural stage – every late August summer, it becomes a festival site for three days. Four performance venues, a branching network of paths among the trees, short distances between stages: if you want to switch from indie-pop to the hardcore stage, it takes less than five minutes.
Four Stages, Broadly Positioned
The Open-Air Stage is the main stage featuring the biggest names: pop veterans like Alphaville or Nik Kershaw, Schlager stars like Vanessa Mai, chart acts like Kamrad. The On The Rock Stage heats up from late afternoon: House, Hardcore, Happy Hardcore, Rave culture with DJ headliners like Moguai, Paul Elstak, or Charly Lownoise. The Comedy and Cabaret Stage presents theatre performances, children's shows, circus acts, and stand-up comedy. The Café Tent serves as both a retreat and a dance floor – with themed evenings like "Disco Inferno – Night of the 80s & 90s" and "Tanzcafé Deluxe”.
A Festival with Market Flair
Unlike pure music festivals, the Parkfest actively integrates other formats: an arts and crafts market with regional exhibitors, a continuous family program with face painting, bouncy castles, and children's theatre, gastronomic stalls from the region, and a small dance floor in the café for the older clientele. This creates a festival that attracts all generations – kindergarten parents in the morning, festival hardcore fans at night. Children up to 14 get in free; the family focus is not just marketing.
Organizers and Tradition
Behind the festival is the non-profit organization Waltroper Parkfest e.V., an association of Waltrop citizens, clubs, and helpers. The voluntary commitment is evident in the festival's attention to detail: deliberate stage decoration, a personal atmosphere, fair prices. Even club shanty choirs and local musicians get their stage alongside the big names.
Waltrop and the Surrounding Area
Those who travel for the Parkfest will find the region worthwhile: the LWL Industrial Museum Henrichenburg Ship Lift showcases one of the most impressive industrial monuments of the Ruhr area, the Datteln-Hamm Canal and the Dortmund-Ems Canal intersect here, and the adjacent nature reserve offers beautiful cycling tours. For longer stays: Datteln, Castrop-Rauxel, Recklinghausen, and Dortmund are reachable in 15–30 minutes.
