Schützenfest BSV Oberwiese — the only one in Waltrop 2026
The Bürger- und Schützenverein Oberwiese Waltrop e.V. — or BSV Oberwiese for short — is one of the most traditional marksmen's clubs in the southwestern Münsterland. In 2026, it holds a special position: its Schützenfest, from June 26th to 28th, 2026, is the only Schützenfest in the area of the former Amt Waltrop this year — the traditional club calendar has shifted, causing other Waltrop brotherhoods to pause their events.
Three Days of Program
The festival follows the classic structure of Westphalian Schützenfeste with king's shooting, parade, and coronation ball:
- Friday, June 26th, 2026 — Festival kickoff with assembly at the festival grounds, opening, and first concert with the already booked festival band
- Saturday, June 27th, 2026 — King's shooting, parade, and the Zapfenstreich (a military ceremony) in the evening, followed by the coronation ball
- Sunday, June 28th, 2026 — Marksmen's mass, bird shooting for the younger generation, and a concluding family program in the festival tent
King's Ball and Preparations
The club's King's Ball already took place on May 2nd, 2026 — a separate pre-celebration that is traditional and important for cohesion within the club year. The club chairman is Christoph Brunswick, and the treasurer is Stefan Langendorf. The music for the Schützenfest has already been booked — a small but significant piece of information in club communications ("The music is ordered").
King's Shooting — The Sporting Highlight
The king's shooting on Saturday is the sporting competition where the marksmen of BSV Oberwiese determine the new club king. The winner wears the king's chain for one year and represents the club at district Schützenfeste and social events.
Conflict-Free Scheduling
An interesting side note: there was originally a conflict with a tractor parade organized by the local youth association, also planned for that weekend. This has been rescheduled to give precedence to the Schützenfest — an example of the cooperative club landscape in the southwestern Münsterland, where dates are coordinated by mutual agreement.
Waltrop in Vest Recklinghausen
Waltrop is located in the north of the Vest Recklinghausen (district of Recklinghausen), on the transition from the Ruhr area to Münsterland. With just under 30,000 inhabitants, the town is a classic medium-sized city — shaped by its mining past (Zeche Waltrop), the Henrichenburg Ship Lift (one of NRW's most important industrial monuments, part of the LWL Industrial Museum), and a vibrant club scene. Marksmanship traditions have deep roots here — as everywhere in western Westphalia.
