Village Schützenfest in the Münsterland — Barrel tapping, bird shooting, king proclamation
To understand the Münsterland, one must know its Schützenfeste. Almost every farming community (Bauerschaft), every district, every parish has its own shooting club — and at least one Schützenfest per year. The tradition often dates back centuries and today is far more than just preserving customs: it is living village community, the most important social event of the year in many Münsterland villages.
Schölling-Holtrup is a small farming community in the north of the Senden municipality in the Coesfeld district, located roughly between Senden and Münster. With only a few hundred inhabitants, the village could easily be overlooked — were it not for the extremely active Schölling-Holtrup Shooting Club (Schützenverein Schölling-Holtrup e.V.), which shapes social life year-round: hiking days, harvest festival (Erntedankfest), shooting competitions, coffee and cake at the Alten Zollhaus — and, of course, the big annual Schützenfest.
The opening is classically marked by the barrel tapping (Fassanstich) by the reigning shooting king or a guest of honor. This is followed by an evening celebration in the festival tent with live music from a regionally known band or orchestra. Here, the young and old mingle — many stay until the early hours of the morning.
In the morning, the Schützenfest High Mass is held, followed by the parade (Festumzug) through the farming community, often accompanied by music from friendly shooting club bands and marching bands. In the afternoon, the bird shooting (Vogelschießen) takes place — the traditional competition to shoot down a wooden bird, the winner of which is proclaimed the new shooting king (Schützenkönig). The crowning ceremony includes the queen (often the wife, sometimes a self-chosen queen) and a grand evening celebration.
The third day is traditionally the family day: morning pint (Frühschoppen), lunch in the festival tent, afternoon coffee and cake, children's carousels. In the evening, a relaxed conclusion with the regular festival patrons.
It is not spectacular, but authentic. Those looking for a huge folk festival (Volksfest) should go to Münster or Dortmund. But if you want to see how Westphalian village community works — how a club, with voluntary commitment over generations, organizes a festival that sustains the social cohesion of an entire community — then this is the place to be. Visitors from outside are welcome, but should know: this is a club festival, not a tourist festival.
