Albachten — District in Southwest Münster

Münster, a large city with around 320,000 inhabitants and the seat of the Münster administrative district, is the capital of the Münsterland region (an independent city in the Münster administrative district). Albachten is a western district with a village-like character — its own parish (St. Ludgerus), its own market square (Rottkamp), its own club life. The Albachten Christmas Market is one of the characteristic district festivals that emphasizes Albachten's cultural independence. In 2026, it runs from November 27 to 29 — on the 1st Advent weekend.

Münster's Most Musical Christmas Market

Over the years, the Albachten Christmas Market has earned a special reputation: it is considered Münster's most musical Christmas market. Over the three market days, numerous local choirs and orchestras perform: the St. Ludgerus Church Choir, the MGV Liederkranz Albachten, the Youth Band, local brass choirs, singing groups, and Advent orchestras. The performances throughout the Advent days give Rottkamp square a special acoustic atmosphere.

1st Advent Weekend — Kick-off to the Advent Season

The 1st Advent weekend is symbolically particularly important in the Advent calendar: the beginning of the Advent season, the first candle on the Advent wreath, the start of the festive weeks. Albachten uses this date for its Christmas market — anyone who wants to experience the start of Münster's Advent season in the traditional district should head to Albachten.

Mulled Wine, Roasted Almonds, Crafts

The culinary and commercial offerings follow proven Christmas market tradition: mulled wine and punch in various versions (classic, white mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle, children's punch), roasted almonds and gingerbread hearts, bratwurst, and potato pancakes (Münsterland specialty). Craft stalls offer Advent wreaths, Advent candles, wooden decorations, Christmas tree ornaments, knitwear — much of it from Albachten and Münsterland craftsmanship.

Event by Local Associations

The Albachten Christmas Market is organized by local associations — the kfd St. Ludgerus (Catholic Women's Community of Germany of the St. Ludgerus parish) runs an important stall with homemade cakes and mulled wine. Other associations (Schützenverein Albachten, Heimatverein, sports clubs, parish community, carnival club) are represented with their own stalls. The proceeds go to the associations' activities and to social projects in the district.

District Atmosphere Instead of Crowds

In contrast to the large Christmas market in Münster's city center (around 1.5 million visitors), the Albachten market offers an intimate district atmosphere: manageable size, personal encounters, local club life, fewer tourists. Those seeking authentic Münsterland customs will find themselves better catered for here than at the main market square.

Albachten is accessible by car via the B 51 (Münster–Coesfeld) and via the A 1 (Münster-Süd exit). By public transport: Stadtwerke Münster bus line 5 (stop Albachten Marktplatz Rottkamp). Travel time from Münster city center is about 20-25 minutes.
