Three-day Schützenfest of the St. Hubertus Brotherhood in Münster's west
If you travel west in Münster, you'll reach Albachten — one of the western districts with around 6,500 inhabitants. Historically, Albachten was an independent farming village in Münster's Westmünsterland and was only incorporated into Münster in 1975. To this day, the district has retained its village identity: its own parish church, its own school, its own club landscape. The St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft Albachten is one of the most important associations with centuries of tradition.
The patron of the Brotherhood is Saint Hubert of Liège (657–727) — Bishop, patron saint of hunters and marksmen. Hubert is the second most important patron saint of marksmen in German shooting traditions after Sebastian, particularly widespread in the Rhineland-Westphalian region. His feast day is November 3 — many Hubertus Brotherhoods celebrate their main mass on or around this date, sometimes combined with the Schützenfest. In Albachten, the Brotherhood is historically linked to the Hubertus tradition.
The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Sunday, August 30 to Tuesday, September 1, 2026 — three festival days at the end of the NRW summer holidays and the beginning of the new school year:
The bird shooting on the festival Sunday is the central event: Brotherhood members take turns shooting at the wooden bird on the shooting stand. Whoever knocks down the last piece becomes the new King — and will reign over the Brotherhood for the upcoming term. The coronation takes place ceremoniously in the festival tent, followed by the King's Ball on the festival Monday evening.
The musical accompaniment for the festival is provided by the Bläservereinigung Albachten — the district's traditional brass band. The association accompanies all important program points: opening of the festival mass, festival parade, coronation march, festival tent program in the evening. Without the Bläservereinigung, the Schützenfest in its traditional form would be unthinkable — many members are active marksmen themselves or are connected to the Brotherhood through family ties.
The shooting club tradition is particularly strong in Münster and the Münsterland region. Practically every district of Münster has its own shooting brotherhood with an annual Schützenfest — Hiltrup, Wolbeck, Roxel, Gievenbeck, Coerde, Mecklenbeck, Albachten, and many more. The festival dates are spread throughout the summer and autumn, creating a dense Schützenfest calendar in Münster's west. Brotherhoods visit each other for the parades — a vibrant regional network.
Detailed program information (exact times, festival tent layout, ticket prices, date of the King's Ball) will be communicated by the St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft Albachten via their Instagram presence @st_hubertus_albachten and the Albachten district website albachten-ms.de. Those planning to attend the 2026 festival should follow these channels for current updates in the summer of 2026.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition of the Münster-Albachten Schützenfest. Three festival days at the end of August / beginning of September with classic Westphalian Schützen customs: festival mass for the opening, bird shooting with coronation of the new king, a grand parade through Albachten, and the King's Ball as the finale. The Bläservereinigung Albachten will provide musical accompaniment for all important program points.
Festival parade is public. King's Ball and festival tent evenings are partially subject to a charge — tickets via the Brotherhood.
By bus: Line 5 or 6 from Münster Hbf to Albachten Markt. By car: A1 exit Münster-Süd, then follow signs to Albachten.
