Meteoritmo — the annual sound journey of the Musikverein Steinheim
In spring 2013, the Musikverein Steinheim a. A. 1904 e.V. launched the first edition of Meteoritmo — a conceptually structured themed concert by its large wind orchestra. The series has been held annually ever since, each with a different motto to structure the musical program. On Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 8:00 PM, the 2026 edition will take place in the Albuchhalle Steinheim. The motto: "Mountains of Music" — a musical sound journey through mountains, heights, and alpine themes.
"Mountains of Music" — the 2026 motto
The 2026 program is dedicated to works thematically linked to mountains, peaks, and heights. Classical and modern wind orchestra literature that deals with the alpine world, mountaineering, the pathos of altitude, or folkloric mountain traditions. Expect pieces from the classical and modern wind music repertoire — original compositions for wind orchestra as well as arrangements of symphonic music or film music with mountain themes. The exact setlist will be announced during the concert program design.
The large wind orchestra — the sound body
The concert is performed by the large wind orchestra of the Musikverein Steinheim — one of the most respected wind orchestras in the Württemberg Ostalbkreis. The orchestra has about 60 to 80 members with a classical wind orchestra setup: woodwinds (flutes, clarinets, saxophones, oboes), brass (trumpets, horns, trombones, tuba), percussion (drums, timpani). The Musikverein Steinheim a. A. 1904 e.V. is one of the oldest music associations in the region — with the motto "Many have tradition. Ours has a future," the association is committed to innovation and high-quality musical work.
Concert recording and cult status
A special feature of the Meteoritmo series: The concerts are professionally recorded — by a live sound studio. Subsequently, the recordings are released on CD or as digital publications and are praised in the wind music community. Over the years, a cult following has developed around Meteoritmo — wind music lovers from southern Württemberg and beyond travel specifically for these concerts. Collectors often have all Meteoritmo editions in their collection.
Albuchhalle Steinheim — the venue
The Albuchhalle is the multi-purpose hall of the municipality of Steinheim am Albuch. It is used for sports events, club festivals, and larger concert events. With a capacity of around 500 to 800 seats, it is ideal for a wind orchestra concert like Meteoritmo — large enough for the sound to unfold, small enough for an intimate atmosphere where the audience can hear every nuance.
Steinheim am Albuch and the Ostalbkreis
Steinheim am Albuch is a municipality in the Ostalbkreis district, on the eastern edge of the Swabian Jura. The town is primarily known for the Steinheimer Becken — a meteorite crater from the Miocene epoch, about 15 million years ago. The basin is related to the nearby Nördlinger Ries; both were formed by a double meteorite impact catastrophe. The concert's name Meteoritmo elegantly alludes to this geological identity — Meteorite-Steinheim meets Rhythm. The region around Steinheim is an interesting hiking destination in summer with the Meteorite Crater Trail and viewpoints into the basin.
