Ten Sunday concerts between May and July in the historic Hamborn Volkspark — Free admission
The Parkkonzerte im Jubiläumshain are among the longest-running open-air concert series in the Ruhr area. Every summer from mid-May to mid-July, ten Sunday concerts transform the Jubiläumshain — the large public park in the Duisburg district of Hamborn — into a free open-air stage. The organizers are the Kulturbüro of the City of Duisburg and the Lions-Club Duisburg-Hamborn, who have jointly supported the format for decades. 2026 Season: May 17 to July 19, ten dates, always Sundays at 11:00 AM, free admission.
The Jubiläumshain is located in the northern Duisburg district of Hamborn on Ziegelhorststraße. Laid out in the early 20th century as a civic public park, it features the typical Konzertmuschel (open concert stage with a shell-shaped roof) and a spacious lawn area where hundreds of listeners can take a seat. The atmosphere is that of a classic German spa concert tradition: picnic blankets, folding chairs, older regular attendees with program booklets, families with children on the lawns — a form of folk music appreciation that has become rare in large cities.
The ten concerts cover a broad spectrum: Shanty choirs with maritime songs (Marina Oberhausen, Duisburg-WSP), brass bands (BSW Hohenbudberg, Musikvereinigung Duisburg West, Bläsersymphonie Abtei Hamborn, Lohmühle), Bandonion ensembles (Bandonion-Freunde Essen — a rare specialty in NRW), guitar duos (Saitenweise), folk music groups („Wahre Freunde“), and Austrian Steirerklänge (Die Bergsteirer as the closing highlight). Those who attend the entire series will experience a cross-section of the club music scene of the Ruhr area and its neighboring regions.
A special date is the concert by the Bläsersymphonie der Abtei Hamborn on July 5. The Abtei Hamborn — a Premonstratensian monastery and a culturally historic Hamborn institution — cultivates its own brass music tradition. Its Bläsersymphonie is known beyond the district's borders and brings liturgical brass literature, classical repertoire, and new brass music of a high standard to the Jubiläumshain.
The Kulturbüro of the City of Duisburg curates the series and ensures the technical infrastructure. The Lions-Club Duisburg-Hamborn provides financial and volunteer support — typical of the German tradition where local service clubs promote folk culture. This constellation makes free admission possible. Those who want to learn more about the series or get involved can contact Anika Huskic at the Kulturbüro.
The 2026 Parkkonzerte season runs from May 17 to July 19 with ten Sunday dates. From Shanty to Steirerklang, it covers the broad spectrum of regional club music.
