Medieval Meets Halloween
The Mystical Medieval Market in Duisburg-Neumühl is a special case in the NRW medieval market landscape: it takes place in late October, during the Halloween period, and combines classic medieval market customs with fantasy elements from the darker side of the Middle Ages and popular Halloween mythology: jesters (medieval-courtly), witches (folklore + Halloween costumes), magicians and sorcerers (fantasy inspiration), plus dark creatures in Halloween style. The market concept is clearly family-friendly, but has a mature, atmospheric layer that is particularly effective in the evening light.
Hohenzollernplatz as Market Square
The venue is Hohenzollernplatz in the Duisburg district of Neumühl – a smaller district, the square is manageable but well-suited for a compact market. Around 60 market traders, craftspeople, and caterers are spread across the square and adjacent streets, along with several stages for music and show acts.
Market Profile
The range of exhibitors is classically medieval: blacksmiths with swords and knives, leatherworkers with bags, belts, shoes, costumes for Halloween and medieval fans, cribs and wooden toys, medieval dishes (suckling pig, spit-roasted sausages, witch's stew in clay pots), mead and honey wine, plus Halloween specialties (sweets, dark jewelry, tarot cards).
Music, Acrobats, Fire Show
Beyond the market stalls, there is a show program: walking acts with stilt walkers in medieval costumes, medieval music groups with bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, and drums, acrobats with juggling and floor acrobatics, and a fire show as a spectacular evening highlight. Bards and storytellers perform on a small stage, reading fairy tales from the Middle Ages and fantasy narratives.
Festa Medievale as Organizer
The organizer is Festa Medievale, a smaller initiative for medieval and fantasy events in the Ruhr area. The company organizes several markets at various locations in NRW – the Neumühl market has been the organizer's annual Halloween format since 2023.
Duisburg-Neumühl
Neumühl is a district in northern Duisburg with a mixed structure. The city center of Duisburg, the harbor, and the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord (a famous industrial culture monument) are easily accessible from Hohenzollernplatz.
