Four Days of Advent Atmosphere Under the Hellenstein
The Heidenheim Christmas Market is deliberately not a mass market with 200 stalls, but focuses on quality and atmosphere. For four days, from Thursday, December 10th to Sunday, December 13th, 2026, the Hintere Gasse and the adjacent pedestrian zone in Heidenheim's city center will be transformed into a lovingly decorated Christmas market under the motto „Vorweihnacht unterm Hellenstein“.
Hintere Gasse: A Backdrop for Tradition
The Hintere Gasse is a narrow, historic street in Heidenheim's old town, lined with small shops and half-timbered facades — making it the ideal setting for a market with a classic, romantic character. The stalls are close together in the narrow alley, creating an intimate, almost living-room-like atmosphere, quite different from the open squares in Munich or Nuremberg.
Traditional Crafts and Gift Ideas
Instead of mass-produced goods, the city of Heidenheim opts for a curated selection: wood carvings, candles, jewelry, glass art, Christmas decorations from the Erzgebirge region, embroidery, felt items, regional honeys, jams, liqueurs, and gingerbread. The focus is on artisans and small manufacturers from the Ostalbkreis and the Württemberg region.
Culinary Delights in Connection with the Autumn-Winter Village
The gastronomic offerings are linked to the neighboring Autumn-Winter Village at Eugen-Jaekle-Platz, which is open before and after the Christmas market. This creates an axis of culinary experiences: Heidenheim bratwurst, roasted chestnuts, crêpes, tarte flambée, mulled wine, punch, and sweet specialties. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.
Heidenheim and the Hellenstein
Heidenheim an der Brenz is the district capital of the Heidenheim district in Baden-Württemberg, located at the transition between the Swabian Jura and the eastern Swabian Jura foothills. The Hellenstein Castle, one of the largest castle ruins in Southern Germany, towers over the city. The town's motto, „Vorweihnacht unterm Hellenstein“, references this landmark, which remains visible from the market and is illuminated in winter.
