Multi-genre season of drama, music theatre, dance, and concerts in the new theatre factory Blaue Halle
The Mainfranken Theater Würzburg boasts over 200 years of theatre tradition and is currently the largest multi-genre venue in the Mainfranken region of Lower Franconia. Each season features around 450 performances on its schedule, including approximately 15 premieres across drama, music theatre, and dance, complemented by six symphony concerts and six chamber concerts.
Since the reopening of the renovated theatre new building in December 2023, the venue comprises five performance spaces: the Große Haus (main stage), Kleines Haus, Probebühne, Theaterfabrik Blaue Halle (with shuttle bus service), and the baroque Toscanasaal of the Würzburg Residence. This diversity allows for productions ranging from intimate chamber plays to opulent opera performances.
In music theatre, the highly anticipated premiere of Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera, 'Fidelio', on March 7, 2026, at the Theaterfabrik Blaue Halle takes centre stage. For drama, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's 'The Threepenny Opera' (February 15, 2026) and Chekhov's 'Three Sisters' (April 18, 2026) will be staged. Other productions include the double opera program 'Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci', the operetta 'Im weißen Rössl', the musical 'Anatevka', and dance performances 'Vox et Spiritus', 'Tanzen bis in die Puppen', and 'Tanzxperiment'. Additionally, there are children's and family productions ('Was Wanda will', 'Adina und Nemorino oder der Liebestrank') as well as revivals like The Rocky Horror Show.
Würzburg, a Franconian episcopal and university city on the Main River, with its UNESCO World Heritage Residence, has a rich tradition of theatre, music, and festivals. The Mainfranken Theater is central to this cultural identity – both geographically (located at Theaterplatz with access via Theaterstraße 21) and programmatically (a meeting point for the region and tourists).
In the second half of the 2025/26 season (January–July 2026), the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg concentrates its major premieres: Bertolt Brecht / Kurt Weill's 'The Threepenny Opera' (Premiere February 15, 2026), Ludwig van Beethoven's 'Fidelio' at the Theaterfabrik Blaue Halle (Premiere March 7, 2026), and Anton Chekhov's 'Three Sisters' (Premiere April 18, 2026).
In addition, there will be symphony and chamber concerts, dance productions, and revivals from the first half of the season, including the popular Rocky Horror Show.
