Maibock tapping at the oldest Spreewald brewery
In 1788, the first beer kettle was fired up in Schlepzig in the Spreewald (Dahme-Spreewald district). Since then, the Spreewälder Privatbrauerei 1788 has been brewing with few interruptions – today as part of the Spreewaldresort „Seinerzeit“, a hotel and restaurant complex that integrates the historic brewery. The brewery is now one of the oldest continuously operated breweries in Brandenburg and an important factor of identity for Schlepzig.
The brewery festival on April 26, 2026, marks the official opening of the Maibock season. The Maibock – a strong seasonal beer with a higher alcohol content and intense malt flavor – is traditionally tapped at the beginning of spring. The first tapping is the ceremonial opening of the festival season. In Schlepzig, the festival day begins at 12 p.m., and the brewery courtyard is open to visitors.
Classic brewery festival format: Maibock tapping by the brewmaster or an invited guest (often local dignitaries), live music on a small stage in the brewery courtyard, catering from the resort's kitchen (Spreewald specialties: Plinse, cucumber soup, schnitzel, vegetarian options). Brewery tours are often part of the program.
Schlepzig is located in the Spreewald and is a classic starting point for punt boat tours through the canals. Those who are traveling in the Spreewald anyway (Lübbenau, Burg, Lübben, Schlepzig) often combine a visit to the brewery festival with a punt boat tour before or after the festival day. It is also traditional for the Maibock barrel to be transported to the brewery by Spreewald punt.
The brewery courtyard – a historic quadrangle with brick architecture – becomes an open-air stage. The tapping around noon is performed by the resort management or the brewmaster, after which the young Maibock beer is also available for tasting samples. Throughout the day: brewery tours, tastings, live music on stage, catering by the Spreewaldresort kitchen.
