About Kirchweih Oberdorf
Kirchweih Oberdorf — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Oberdorfer Kerwa follows the classic Middle Franconian choreography. It opens on Friday, September 25th, 2026, with the ceremonial erection of the Kerwabaum by the Kerwaburschen and Kerwamadla and a first dance evening.
The highlight is Sunday, September 27th: a festive church service and Frühschoppen in the morning, a Franconian festive meal at noon, and in the afternoon the traditional Kerwabaumtanz, where the couples in traditional costume dance in a circle around the Kerwabaum.
The Kehrausabend on Monday, September 28th, concludes the festival with local club music.

Oberdorfer Kerwa — Four Days of Customs in Roth-Middle Franconia
The Kirchweih (dialectally "Kerwa") is one of the oldest and most stable village events in Middle Franconia. In Oberdorf, a district of the market town Thalmässing, the Kerwa is traditionally celebrated at the end of September — embedded in a dense regional Kerwa calendar that runs from mid-September to the end of October, putting the Roth-Middle Franconian region in a festive mood weekend after weekend.
Thalmässing and its Districts — Market Town in the Roth District
The market town of Thalmässing is located in the Roth district in Middle Franconia (Bavaria), south of the city of Roth and west of Hilpoltstein. It consists of the main town Thalmässing and numerous districts, including Oberdorf. Each district maintains its own Kerwa tradition with an individual date and individual organisation.
What Characterises a Franconian Kerwa
The Middle Franconian village Kerwa follows a typical programme sequence, lasting four days from Friday to Monday:
- Friday — Erection of the Kerwabaum by the young men (Kerwaburschen) and young women (Kerwamadla); evening dance party
- Saturday — Dance party with live band; performance by the Kerwaburschen with the decorated Kerwabaum
- Sunday — Festive church service, Frühschoppen (morning pint), lunch with roast pork or similar Franconian specialities, in the afternoon Kerwapaartanz (couples' dance) and the traditional Kerwabaumtanzen (dancing around the Maypole) with the young men and women in traditional costume
- Monday — Kehrausabend (farewell evening) with dancing and club music
Küchle, Kerwabaum, Kerwaburschen — The Franconian Trilogy
Three elements characterise every Middle Franconian Kerwa:
- The Kerwabaum — a decorated fir or spruce tree, erected on Friday and danced around by the young men and women on Sunday afternoon. Afterwards, it is guarded: other villages traditionally try to "steal" the tree, which is a playful-competitive tradition between the villages.
- The Kerwapaare — Young men and women in Franconian traditional costume (Lederhosen, Trachtenkleid), who lead the programme as "Kerwaburschen" and "Kerwamadla".
- Küchle — Franconian doughnuts (yeast dough fried in lard), served with coffee on Sunday afternoon. Widespread in Middle Franconia, often homemade in the village.
Embedded in the Regional Kerwa Calendar
The Oberdorfer Kerwa is just one of dozens of Kerwas in the Roth district. In late summer and autumn 2026, the villages alternate in a dense rhythm — making the region a perfect destination for tradition enthusiasts who can visit several Kerwas on consecutive weekends.
