The Detscher is a thin, crisply baked potato flatbread made from grated raw potatoes, flour, salt, and sometimes bacon – a specialty of the Saale valley cultivated for centuries. In Saalfeld, it has been the centerpiece of its own folk festival annually for over three decades.

What makes the Detscherfest special: The potato flatbreads are baked directly in the market square on historic Detscher ovens. Volunteer teams from clubs, the city administration, politics, and business compete against each other – who makes the crispiest, most delicious Detscher? A mix of baking competition, folk festival, and show cooking.

"There Is No Other Like It"

The Detscherfest is considered "the largest Detscherfest in the world – because there is no other like it," according to the organizers' self-ironic slogan. Traditionally, malt coffee or freshly tapped Saalfeld beer is served. Musical entertainment accompanies the baking.

Feengrotten Classics – Classic Cars Meet Potatoes

In the afternoon, the "Feengrotten Classics" classic car rally rolls into the market square – a tour that owes its name to the world-famous Saalfeld Fairy Grottos, the most colorful show mine in the world. The combination of Detscher and classic cars is the unmistakable Saalfeld version of a city festival.
