Saalfeld's biggest city festival — Live music on two stages with craft market and 15,000 visitors
Saalfeld/Saale is the district town of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in southern Thuringia, known primarily for the Feengrotten — the 'most colorful show grottos in the world' — and its medieval townscape around the market square and Saaletor. For four days in mid-June, the market square transforms into an open-air festival stage, with a second stage set up at the outdoor swimming pool. What began as a historic market fair with bratwurst stands and a farmers' market has grown over 100 years into a modern city festival that combines live music and craft market traditions.
The concept of the Saalfelder Marktfest rests on two locations. The main stage in the market square, set against the historic backdrop of the town hall and market church, is the venue for headline concerts (typically starting at 8:00 PM). The second stage at the outdoor swimming pool serves as an open-air dance area with cover bands and DJ sets, often continuing well past midnight. Visitors can move between the two locations — about an 800-meter walk — switching between concerts, market stalls, and the town center.
The 2026 line-up offers a wide musical spectrum. The New Roses will open the festival on Thursday evening with international hard rock — the Wiesbaden-based band has established itself as one of Germany's most important rock acts in the last decade. On Friday evening, Gregor Meyle, the singer-songwriter ('Du bist das Licht', 'Keine ist wie du'), will perform with his band. On Saturday, Tiavo (Alternative Indie), Mr. Hurley & die Pulveraffen (Folk Rock with a pirate show), Mein Elba (Singer-Songwriter), and Surfaces (Cover Band) will alternate. On Sunday, the Train Yard Kings (Rockabilly) will rock the festival finale.
Between concerts, a traditional craft market takes place in the market square and adjacent alleys — featuring artisans, potters, leatherworkers, bakers, and regional gastronomy. On the weekend, a children's and family program is added, with hands-on activities, a fairytale stage, and a children's disco. Anyone spending a day in Saalfeld should definitely visit the Feengrotten (a 15-minute walk from the market square) — Germany's oldest show grottos with their colorful stalactite formations.
