141 Years of Müllheim Wine Market
The Müllheimer Weinmarkt was founded in 1872 — at a time when the Markgräflerland was just reinventing itself after the phylloxera catastrophe. Today, it is the oldest and largest wine market in the region and one of the most traditional wine markets in all of Baden-Württemberg. The organizer is Müllheim Touristik GmbH in cooperation with the vintners of the Markgräflerland. The 141st edition in 2026 will take place in April as usual — Friday, April 24, 2026, from 4 PM to 10 PM.
25 Vintners from the Markgräflerland
The Markgräflerland is one of Germany's southernmost wine-growing regions — located between Freiburg and Basel, at the foot of the Black Forest, climatically favored by the nearby Rhine. The 25 participating producers in 2026 come from Müllheim itself as well as from the surrounding villages: Britzingen, Hügelheim, Niederweiler, Sulzburg, Auggen, Buggingen. Family businesses and larger cooperatives present the full spectrum of Markgräfler viticulture.
Tasting by Grape Variety — The Müllheim Method
A special feature of the Müllheim Wine Market is the sorting of wines by grape variety: Instead of each vintner presenting their entire range at their own stand, the Civic Center offers thematic tasting areas — all Gutedel wines together, all Pinot Noir together, all Müller-Thurgau together, all Chardonnay together. This way, you can directly compare how Vintner X crafts their Gutedel compared to Vintner Y. This educational approach distinguishes the Müllheim market from other wine festivals, which are usually structured by producer.
Gutedel — The Specialty of the Markgräflerland
The main grape variety of the Markgräflerland is Gutedel (French Chasselas, Swiss Fendant) — an old, spicy-elegant white wine variety that has been grown here since the 18th century. About 40% of the Markgräfler vineyard area is planted with Gutedel. At the Müllheim Wine Market, Gutedel is the focus — but also Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and smaller quantities of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, and newer varieties like Souvignier Gris.
Admission and Tasting Glass
Admission costs €20 and includes the tasting glass (separate €5), which you can take home. With the glass, you move freely between the thematic areas — a small coin or stamp on a card is recorded for each glass of wine. Tickets are available in advance via Reservix or the Müllheim Tourist Info. Please note: The market regularly sells out, so early purchase is recommended.
Müllheim and the Markgräflerland
Müllheim, with around 19,000 inhabitants, is the administrative and economic center of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district (AGS 08315). The town lies at the transition from the Rhine plain to the Black Forest and is a hub for wine tourists — from here, you can reach the famous wine-growing villages of the Markgräflerland in 10–15 minutes. Convenient train connections from Freiburg (30 minutes) and Basel (40 minutes) make Müllheim easily accessible even without a car.
