Open-air festival series with African cuisine, music, and community in the Schanzenviertel
Unlike most food festivals in the Hanseatic city, ROOTS functions as a recurring series: once a month between April and September. Located in the Eimsbüttel district, right on the border with the Schanzenviertel, is the Schröderstift inner courtyard – a green open-air space operated by the Schrödingers event venue. Six Sundays will each become a meeting point for Hamburg's African diaspora and a cosmopolitan urban society seeking African cuisine and sounds in their city.
The focus is on the diversity of African food cultures. Chefs from West African, East African, South African, and North African traditions stand at adjacent stalls – each offering their own menu. You'll find classic dishes like Jollof rice, Injera with Tibs, Bobotie, Tagine, Suya skewers, and Mafé. The pop-up stalls change depending on the edition, making each visit a slightly different culinary journey.
Each edition is accompanied by music: Afrobeat, Highlife, Soukous, Amapiano, Ndombolo. DJs and small live ensembles alternate – the atmosphere is relaxed during the day, becoming danceable towards the evening. The organizers describe the event as "good vibes, music and community in the open air" and they mean it: the festival is a meeting place for Hamburg's African diaspora, while also being open to everyone who wants to experience African culture.
The May edition is planned as a Pentecost special and runs on Pentecost Sunday – longer, with an expanded program and a special lineup. The summer editions in July and August are typically the best in terms of weather and attract the most visitors.
Schrödingers is located at Schröderstiftstraße 7 in the Eimsbüttel district, a five-minute walk from the Schlump subway station (U2/U3). In recent years, the location has become an important address for culinary and cultural open-air formats in Hamburg's west.
