Cultural Christmas Market in the University Quarter
While the Rathausmarkt, Jungfernstieg, and Spitalerstraße markets represent the tourist face of Hamburg's Advent season, Christgrindelmarkt has developed as the cultural counterweight since 2012 (or even earlier). The venue is Allendeplatz in the Grindelviertel — the academic quarter around the University of Hamburg in the Rotherbaum district, Eimsbüttel borough. The market promotes itself with the description "a cultural Christmas market with heart".
At the heart of the market is a large, heated cultural tent. Over the five weeks of the market, it hosts concerts, readings, theatre performances, and small-scale theatrical formats — from folk bands and spoken word to Advent choir performances. The cultural program is announced continuously; much of it is included in the admission price or accessible for a small solidarity contribution.
The gastronomic offerings are deliberately broad and international: traditional bratwurst and pastries with almonds alongside vegan currywurst, Tex-Mex from a food truck, and crêpes. This clearly distinguishes the market from classic models. An elf workshop offers children small craft and participation stations during market hours, with a children's program running on weekends on the small stage.
The Grindelviertel is a historically dense and multifaceted quarter in Rotherbaum (Eimsbüttel borough). Until 1939, it was one of Hamburg's most important Jewish quarters. Today, the university, libraries, students, migrant communities, and lively gastronomy shape the area. Christgrindelmarkt draws from this mix — its audience ranges from students and academic staff to families from the neighbouring Harvestehude district. The 15th edition runs in 2026.
The market and its cultural program are spread over approximately five weeks. Allendeplatz is occupied during this time with stalls, food trucks, and the central cultural tent. On weekdays, the market opens in the late afternoon, and on weekends, it opens at noon. The longest opening hours are until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
The detailed program for 2026, including concert dates and performances, will be announced on christgrindelmarkt.de. As in previous years, small concerts, readings, Advent choir performances, cabaret, and smaller theatrical formats alternate. The children's program runs particularly on weekends.
The complete concert and program list will be published on christgrindelmarkt.de before the market begins.
