Witches' fire, ghost walk, and magic barrel in the spa park of the Thuringian spa town
Bad Klosterlausnitz is a small spa town in the Saale-Holzland district, located east of Jena. The town owes its reputation primarily to its moorland spa and its traditional spa park. It is precisely this spa park that becomes the stage for one of the region's most traditional spring festivals during the Walpurgisnacht. While the famous Walpurgis celebrations in Schierke, Thale, and on the Brocken in the Harz mountains attract crowds, the Lausnitzer Walpurgisnacht has developed its own, family-friendly format – manageable, cozy, and community-oriented.
The witches' fire is traditionally lit in the spa park – a large pile of wood that burns brightly after sunset and, in mythology, drives away the last remnants of winter. A guided ghost walk through the nocturnal park paths is a second central program item: in the darkness, actors recount regional legends, witch myths, and spooky stories – a playful mix of tradition and entertainment. The program is accompanied by musical interludes and witches' and devils' dances.
The two organizing associations are responsible for catering. Guests are served from the 'magic barrel' – a specially brewed beer or punch. Traditional dishes are prepared on the spit: pork on a rotisserie, sausages, and Thuringian bratwurst. This gastronomic component makes the Lausnitzer Walpurgisnacht a convivial evening program that often lasts late into the night.
What distinguishes the Lausnitzer Walpurgisnacht from other comparable festivals is its clear anchoring in two local associations: the Burschengesellschaft des Maibaumsetzens e.V. (responsible for the Maypole tradition, also carried out on May 1st) and the Bad Klosterlausnitz Volunteer Fire Brigade. This association structure ensures a warm, local atmosphere where the festival feels less touristy than some large events in the Harz mountains.
On the eve of May 1, 2026, residents and guests will gather in the Bad Klosterlausnitz spa park for the traditional Walpurgisnacht. Admission is from 6 PM; the witches' fire will be lit after dark. The ghost walk begins during the evening and leads through the nocturnal park paths – with storytelling, performances, and witch dances.
Special drinks will be served from the magic barrel, and specialties will be prepared on the spit. The organizers are the Burschengesellschaft des Maibaumsetzens e.V. and the Bad Klosterlausnitz Volunteer Fire Brigade.
