A Historic Trade Route in Festival Mode
The Hermsdorfer Straßenfest is one of the oldest and most traditional street festivals in East Thuringia. Since 1993, the Alte Regensburger Straße — Hermsdorf's historic main axis — transforms into an open festival mile on the second weekend of September for Open Monument Day. In 2026, the 27th edition will take place on September 12th and 13th.
The Alte Regensburger Straße as a Venue
The festival mile stretches from the historic inn «Zum schwarzen Bär» — Hermsdorf's oldest building — to the inn «Zur Linde». Both buildings are part of the listed architectural substance of the former trade route, which connected Regensburg and Leipzig in the Middle Ages and gave Hermsdorf its geographical significance. During the festival, the houses along this axis become stages, stalls, and seating areas.
Crafts, Folklore, and Musical Diversity
The program showcases remarkable musical diversity: street music, folklore, country, Dixieland, and brass bands alternate on the various stages along the street. In addition, craftspeople present demonstrations — from blacksmithing and weaving to carpentry — and local clubs set up stalls and offer programs. Art stalls and small galleries open their doors as part of Open Monument Day.
Opening on Saturday Evening
Traditionally, the festival kicks off on Saturday evening with a dance event in the courtyard of the Gasthof «Zum schwarzen Bär». Live bands provide the festive opening, accompanied by bratwurst and beer. On Sunday, the stalls along the entire street open — from morning until late afternoon, visitors from Hermsdorf, the Saale-Holzland district, and beyond flock to the event.
Hermsdorf in the Saale-Holzland District
Hermsdorf is located in the Saale-Holzland district (state of Thuringia) at the Hermsdorf motorway junction (A4/A9) — historically a crossroads between southern and central Germany. The street festival culturally preserves this tradition of transport and trade. Travel via A4 or A9, exit Hermsdorf-Ost.
