One of the largest Mosel wine festivals with a parade, crowning of the Wine Queen, and a grand fireworks display
As the last grapes ripen in the steep Mosel slopes at the end of August, Cochem prepares to celebrate its biggest festival of the year. The Homeland and Wine Festival is an institution that resonates far beyond the town's borders: thousands of guests from Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and increasingly from Asia gather between the castle, the Mosel bridge, and the historic old town. The town's narrow location in the valley, squeezed between slopes and the river, gives the festival a concentrated atmosphere found nowhere else on the Mosel.
The program spans five days. The festival opens on Thursday with a ritual similar to a beer tapping and the first dance night in the festival tents. Friday and Saturday are dominated by live bands from the Schlager, cover pop, brass, and rock spectrum; on the market square stage, a traditional block of traditional costume bands and choirs often plays in parallel. Sunday is the big day: an ecumenical service opens the morning, the festival parade forms at noon and proceeds through the old town around 2 PM. Costume groups, music clubs, vintner wagons, decorated floats, and wine royalty from numerous Mosel communities make up the procession. In the evening, the town crowns the new Cochem Wine Queen on the main stage, followed by the grand fireworks display around 10 PM.
Between the main program events, stands from Cochem and neighboring vintners are set up along the Mosel promenade. Here, guests can sample Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Spätburgunder, Sekt, and the Spätlesen (late harvest wines) typical of the region, ranging from semi-dry to noble sweet. Several passenger ships offer special trips on Sunday evening with a view of the fireworks; tickets are available on the shipping companies' websites or directly at the pier. Admission to the festival is free; only glasses and food are subject to a charge.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the city of Cochem in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: Opening on Thursday evening with the first dance night, stage program on Friday and Saturday until late at night, festival parade on Sunday afternoon, crowning of the Wine Queen and fireworks on Sunday evening, a quiet closing on Monday with a morning pint and closing music. Passenger ships offer special trips with a view of the fireworks.
