Lützen and Swedish History

Lützen is small—fewer than 8,000 inhabitants—but historically significant. Here, on November 16, 1632, one of the decisive battles of the Thirty Years' War took place, in which the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf met his death. The castle, a Renaissance building, houses the Museum im Schloss Lützen with collections on the town's history and the 1632 battle. Founded in 1928—meaning the 98th Museum Anniversary in 2026.

Castle Festival as a Birthday Celebration

Once a year in July, the town of Lützen combines the museum anniversary with a public castle festival. Program: museum education stations for families, historical reenactments, coffee and cake in the castle courtyard, often with a special theme—Swedish era, Renaissance music, or battle history. Burgenlandkreis and Saale-Unstrut Region

Lützen is located in the Burgenlandkreis (AGS 15084), in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, at the intersection of the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region and the Leipzig Lowland Bay. A day trip to the castle festival can be combined with a visit to the Gustav Adolf Memorial Site (south of the town, on the historic battlefield) or a tour of the vineyards of Freyburg.
