Carnival in Saaleland
Carnival — or Fasching, as the south of Saxony-Anhalt usually calls it — has a long-established tradition in Burgenlandkreis. The town of Lützen, known primarily for the Battle of 1632 and Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus, cultivates a vibrant carnival culture supported by the local Carnival Club. The venue for all events is the Gasthof Roter Löwe on Ernst-Thälmann-Straße — a classic Saalwirtschaft (hall restaurant), typical of the rural and small-town Fasching traditions of Central Germany.
The 2026 season includes five events over two weeks: evening events on Saturdays (January 31 and February 7), children's carnival (February 1), senior's carnival (February 8), and the final Weiberfastnacht (women's carnival) evening on February 12 — all at the Roter Löwe, all with the classic carnival elements: Büttenrede (parody speech), Tanzgarde (dance troupe), Karnevalsorden (carnival medals), and Schlachtruf (battle cry). Ticket prices are moderate (€15 for adults), with ticket reservations starting December 1, 2025.
Burgenlandkreis and its Fasching Villages
Lützen is located in Burgenlandkreis in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, on the border with Saxony. Burgenlandkreis is one of the regions where the Fasching tradition is particularly dense — besides Lützen, Naumburg, Weißenfels, Zeitz, and smaller communities also maintain their own Carnival Clubs. Compared to the Rhenish Carnival, Central German Fasching is smaller, more personal, and more closely tied to local club structures. However, this is precisely what makes it unique: not a mass event, but a club festival with a regular audience.
