Three-day music festival on the schoolyard — Open Air in the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve
Breitfurt is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau, in the southern Saarpfalz district near the French border. The district of Gersheim — with a population of just over 1,000 — is small but impressively active culturally: For years, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Breitfurter Vereine (working group of Breitfurt associations) has organized the Musikkultur im Bliesgau (MIB) festival here, which is known beyond the region in the Saarland jazz and big band scene.
The festival's stage is the schoolyard in Breitfurt. Nestled between the school, old trees, and the village center, it creates an atmosphere that oscillates between summer party and concert evening: lounge chairs, benches, bistro tables, fairy lights strung between the trees. The Bliesgau-Bigband from the neighboring village of Wittersheim is a regular guest, alongside other big bands, jazz combos, folk bands, and individual singer-songwriters.
The program focuses on quality rather than quantity. Top-class musicians from Saarland, the Palatinate, Lorraine, and Luxembourg perform each evening. The lineups vary: Big band concert on Friday evening, jazz and folk on Saturday, acoustic set on Sunday — the exact lineup changes from year to year, but the big band tradition remains the common thread.
As with many village festivals in Saarland, the catering is provided by the participating associations: sports club, music club, fire department, school support association. Bratwurst, Schwenker (grilled meat skewers), fries, pizza, cake, beer, and wine. Proceeds go to the associations' activities and the festival itself.
The Bliesgau is not only a biosphere reserve but also one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Saarland: scattered orchards, beech forests, meandering streams. Those who combine the festival weekend with a hike or bike tour will have one of the most relaxed summer weekend programs in the region.
The location on the German-French border (Sarreguemines, Bitche, and the Pays de Bitche are just minutes away) gives the festival a cross-border flair. French music groups and visitors are regular participants — a small piece of Greater Region culture.
The Arbeitsgemeinschaft Breitfurter Vereine is organizing the popular big band festival on the schoolyard again in 2026. The full program with artist names will be published in early summer 2026 on breitfurt.de and via the festival's Facebook page.
Specific artist names will be announced by the organizer in early summer 2026.
