43rd Patron Saint's Festival of the Parish Church Mariä Heimsuchung in the Bliesgau
The Ommersheim Village Festival is a classic example of Saarland's festival tradition: the religious Patron Saint's Festival and the secular folk festival merge into an inseparable unit. The occasion is the patronage of the parish church Mariä Heimsuchung — an old tradition of piety in the Catholic Saarland that is still alive in many Bliesgau villages today. Since 1980, the parish community, together with local clubs, has organized the festival on the first weekend in July, marking its 43rd edition in 2026.
The program follows a set choreography: a festive church service in the parish church, followed by a procession of the congregation with the brass band of the local music association through the village streets, followed by the tapping of the first beer keg at one of the participating squares (rotated annually among the club stands). This officially opens the festival, and from here, the secular program runs until Sunday evening.
The festival grounds extend across the village center: the main stage and largest festival area are on Vichter Platz, with further stands in front of the fire station, a children's area, and games on the school grounds. Strolling through the village, visitors move from one club stand to the next — sports club, music club, fire department, church groups, youth groups.
The food is classic Saarland fare: Schwenker (the Saarland-style charcoal-grilled steak), Bratwurst (sausage), fries, homemade cakes, fresh Saarländer Lyoner (a type of meat loaf), and cold drinks. At the cake stands run by church groups, there are traditionally the famous Streuselkuchen (crumb cake) and fruit cakes made from Saarland home recipes.
Ommersheim is a district of the municipality of Mandelbachtal in the Saarpfalz district and is located in the heart of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Bliesgau — one of Saarland's richest cultural landscapes with orchards, hills, and stream valleys. Visitors to the village festival have a perfect base for a weekend trip to the Bliesgau, with hikes on the Sankt-Wendelinus trails or a detour to Blieskastel.
Important: The village festival is not a major tourist event, but a local summer celebration. Those who attend mingle with the locals, get to know Saarland's club life, and take away an honest, warm atmosphere. This is precisely what makes it one of the most beautiful village festivals in the Saarpfalz district.
As has been the tradition since 1980, the parish and the Ommersheim clubs organize the Patron Saint's Festival together. In 2026, the date falls on the first weekend in July. The detailed program is traditionally published a few weeks before the festival on ommersheim.de and distributed in the parish newsletter.
Specific performances and stage music for 2026 will be announced with the official program.
