Spring market for gardens, plants, and crafts in the baroque old town
Blieskastel in the Saarpfalz district is one of the most beautiful baroque cities in Saarland. The historic old town around the Paradeplatz tells of the glorious era of the Counts of Leyen in the 18th century — the castle complex, the baroque townhouses, the romantic alleys make Blieskastel a tourist highlight. When the flower market fills this backdrop with blooming plants, garden decorations, and crafts in spring, a unique atmosphere is created.
From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Paradeplatz is filled with exhibitors showcasing a diverse range of products for gardens and plants: perennials, herbs, tomato and vegetable seedlings, exotic succulents, trees, and shrubs for your own garden. In addition, there are crafts — predominantly handmade ceramics, glasswork, wood carvings, floristry, and decorations for home and garden. A special focus is on unique pieces and individual items from small, regional workshops.
What distinguishes the flower market from a purely sales-oriented market is the expert advice: master gardeners and plant experts are on site to provide free advice on garden topics — from choosing the right plants for your location to creative garden design. Those who come to the market with specific questions often leave with new ideas and suitable plants.
Parallel to the market, the shops in Blieskastel's city center open — the Sunday shopping event combines market browsing and a shopping day. Cafés and restaurants in the baroque old town serve breakfast, lunch, and coffee and cake. A classic family Sunday for the entire region: Saarpfalz district, eastern Saarland, and neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate.
Blieskastel is the most important town in the Saarland's Bliesgau — the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the south of the state. Orchards, rolling hills, and small streams characterize the landscape, complemented by the baroque city as a cultural center. Those who want to combine the flower market with a Bliesgau hike will find numerous routes around Blieskastel.
As in previous years, the market opens at 11 a.m. and runs until 6 p.m. Selected exhibitors — predominantly small, regional vendors — present their offerings. The mix of plants, crafts, and advice creates the special charm of the market.
