59th Carnival Parade — Saarpfalz celebrates its Fastnacht in the baroque town center
The Blieskasteler Fastnachtsumzug is one of the most traditional carnival events in Saarpfalz. With the 59th edition in 2026, its history dates back to 1967 — a remarkable example of the Saarland's carnival tradition, the Faasend, which, like everywhere in Saarland, is deeply rooted in folk culture. What makes Blieskastel special: the parade winds through one of the most beautiful baroque city centers in Saarland, past the former princely residence, the baroque Schlosskirche (Palace Church), and the famous Paradeplatz.
The carnival parade starts on Carnival Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 1:30 PM. The city center will be closed to traffic from 1:30 PM to 10:00 PM. The procession goes through the historic city center — past the Stadtwerke (municipal utility company), then towards the roundabout where it dissolves (Bliesgaustraße will be closed). During the parade, floats, dance groups, music bands, and carnival clubs from all over the Saarpfalz district will march through the streets — with confetti, Gudzja (sweets), and Helau calls.
The heart of the day is the Paradeplatz — an impressive baroque square in the middle of Blieskastel-Mitte, which will be completely closed to traffic from February 12 to 16, 2026. The main carnival program takes place here before and after the parade: a festival tent with stage shows, live bands, costume competitions, dance groups, and the typical Saarland mix of satirical speeches and sing-along songs.
Those coming from the Rhineland and familiar with Cologne or Mainz will find familiar and unique elements in Saarland. The floats are politically satirical, the music is carnival schlager, but the dialect is Saarlandic — a mix of Palatinate, Lorraine, and High German. "Helau" sounds the same everywhere, but the atmosphere has its own touch: more rural, warmer, less mass-produced carnival, more club life.
During the parade, only emergency vehicles of the fire department will be in the city center. The German Red Cross (DRK) will be on-site to provide quick assistance. The police will secure the route, and paramedics will be positioned at key points.
Blieskastel is one of the most beautiful towns in the Saarpfalz district and lies on the edge of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve in southeastern Saarland. The baroque residential city has about 21,000 inhabitants, a historically protected city center, and is home to several cultural institutions. Anyone visiting the carnival parade should stay an extra day to explore the town — the Schlosskirche, Schlossbergpark, and the nearby Bliesgau forests are worth the visit.

Free admission. Food and drinks are paid for on-site.
By car via the A 8 (Pirmasens–Luxembourg), exit Blieskastel. By train to Blieskastel-Lautzkirchen station, then about a 10-minute walk to the center. Many city center streets are closed during the parade — park outside the city center.
Parade and events on the Paradeplatz are free. Food and drinks are paid for on-site at the stalls and in the festival tent.
Feel free to come in costume — Carnival is Saarlandic folk culture. Pack a bag for the Gudzja (sweets). Those who want the full program should be in the city center by noon to secure a good spot along the parade route. After the parade, the Paradeplatz is the center of activity. If you need peace and quiet: in one of the baroque cafés on the edge of the Paradeplatz, carnival is a pleasant spectacle from a distance.
