Celtic-Roman festival at the Gallic Oppidum
The Martberg above Pommern is one of the most important archaeological sites in Germany. On the approximately 30-hectare mountain plateau, a Celtic Oppidum (fortified hilltop settlement) was located from the late 1st century BC, which later developed into a central temple district of Gallo-Roman religion. Excavations have unearthed temples, residential buildings, workshops, and thousands of votive offerings, some of which can be seen today at the Landesmuseum Koblenz and in the reconstruction on the Martberg.
The Römerfest brings this history to life for a broad audience. Reenactment groups from all over Germany, France, and Belgium set up their camps on the plateau and present Celtic and Roman life with historical accuracy: blacksmiths, potters, weavers, and bronze casters demonstrate their craft techniques, Roman legionaries drill their battle formations, druids and priests perform ceremonies.
Culinary delights are cooked ancient style. 'Patina' is prepared over an open fire – the Roman casserole made from eggs, honey, olive oil, and various ingredients, which could be sweet or savory depending on the recipe. 'Mulsum', the Roman honey wine, is served, along with 'Pulses' – the simple grain stews that were the staple food of Roman soldiers.
Guided tours of the temple complex and the reconstructed buildings explain the history and function of the sanctuary. Hands-on activities are offered for children – from coin minting and pottery to archery. The Römerfest is an authentic experience that conveys history firsthand.
The Römerfest 2026 will take place on Saturday, May 9th, and Sunday, May 10th, on the Martberg plateau above Pommern. It begins daily at 11:00 AM. The organizer is the Förderkreis Martberg e.V., which has been supporting the maintenance and research of the archaeological site on a voluntary basis for decades.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Förderkreis Martberg in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
