Dalheim Monastery Market — when monasteries hold market day

If you want to experience a unique blend of spirituality, enjoyment, and cultural history on the last weekend of August, it's worth traveling to Dalheim Monastery near Lichtenau in the Paderborn district. Annually on the last weekend of August, the LWL Museum of Monastic Culture opens its grounds to around 50 monasteries, convents, and religious orders from across Europe — making the Dalheim Monastery Market the largest monastery market in Europe.

Who's coming — Monasteries from 5 Countries

The participating religious orders come from Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, France, and Poland — and represent the full spectrum of monastic life: Benedictines, Cistercians, Trappists, Franciscans, Poor Clares, Salesians. Each monastery runs its own production, be it agriculture, distilling, bookbinding, carpentry, icon painting, or natural medicine — and presents its products directly on site.

What to expect — Monastery products, curated and authentic

The product range is legendary:

  • Monastery wines and liqueurs — Stift Melk (Wachau), Stift Klosterneuburg, St. Hildegard Abbey, Stift Heiligenkreuz
  • Delicacies — Breads, cheeses, honey, ham, jams from Königsmünster Abbey, Maria Laach, Helfta
  • Handicrafts — Ceramics, weaving, wood carvings, bookbinding art from Herstelle Abbey, Hegne Monastery
  • Books and icons — Verlag der Erzabtei Beuron, Editions du Cerf
  • Natural cosmetics and medicinal herbs — according to Hildegard tradition, monastery pharmacies

The common promise of all exhibitors: mindful production, exceptional quality, purity, and closeness to nature — values that have shaped monastery products for centuries.

Supporting Program — Crafts, Children, Taizé Prayer

The market is more than just a sales event — it's a two-day monastery festival:

  • Demonstrations of historical crafts — Blacksmiths, bookbinders, candle makers live
  • Hands-on workshops for children and youths — Felting, rolling beeswax candles, calligraphy
  • Laku Paka Puppet Theater — popular family format
  • Spiritual impulses — Lectures, conversations with monks and nuns, spiritual guidance
  • Taizé Prayer — Saturday, 5:00 p.m., in the cloister of the former monastery church; free admission

Location — Dalheim Monastery, a Living Monastery Museum

The venue is the Dalheim Monastery Foundation, the LWL Museum of Monastic Culture — one of Westphalia's most important monastic complexes. The former Augustinian Canons' Monastery (founded 14th century, dissolved during secularization in 1803) was restored by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL) and developed into the only museum in Germany dedicated exclusively to European monastic culture. During the monastery market, the museum, monastery church, cloister, and all monastery gardens (herb garden, vegetable garden, orchard) are accessible — admission is included in the market ticket.

Practical Information — Admission, Travel, Tips

Admission: €8 adults, €7 groups of 16+, €4 concessions, children and youths free, MuseumsCard holders free. The price includes parking, museum admission, guided tours, and monastery gardens.
