20 Years of PLASTINARIUM
The PLASTINARIUM in Guben is the headquarters and public exhibition space for Gunther von Hagens' world-renowned plastination company — the method used to permanently preserve biological specimens for teaching and the popular science BODY WORLDS exhibitions. The PLASTINARIUM was opened in Guben (Spree-Neiße district, on the Polish border) in 2006 — since then, it has attracted thousands of visitors from all over the world interested in the intersection of anatomy, science, and art. In 2026, the PLASTINARIUM celebrates its 20th anniversary.
Open Day — May 21, 2026
To mark the anniversary, the company invites you to an extraordinary open day on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 10 am to 6 pm. Last entry: 4 pm. Admission: €8. No reservation required — tickets are available on-site.
A Look Behind the Scenes
Unlike regular visiting days, on this May 21st, the work areas that are normally strictly shielded will also be accessible:
- Workshops where the plastinated specimens are produced
- Film and photo studio for documentation and media processing
- Shipping warehouse from which the BODY WORLDS exhibitions are supplied worldwide
- Art rooms with original objects by Gunther von Hagens and props from the exhibitions
- Main exhibition of the PLASTINARIUM
The Fascination of Plastination
Plastination was invented in 1977 by Gunther von Hagens — a process in which body fluids and fats are replaced with plastics. The result: permanent, odorless, and true-to-life specimens used in medical education and the BODY WORLDS exhibitions. BODY WORLDS is the world's most successful traveling exhibition — with over 50 million visitors in more than 100 cities.
Note
The open day is aimed at an adult audience but is also suitable for teenagers from around 14 years of age. Sensitive individuals should note that plastinates display original human and animal specimens. Photography is usually restricted inside the PLASTINARIUM — please inquire on-site.
