About Biosphärenfest

Once a year, the Bliesgau celebrates itself: at the Biosphärenfest, regional direct marketers, beekeepers, oil mills, nature guides, environmental associations, and three biosphere schools present their commitment to sustainable management and biodiversity. In 2026, Walsheim (part of Gersheim) will be the venue — the third stop in Gersheim since the festival began in 2004.

A State with UNESCO Status

The Bliesgau in the Saarpfalz district was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2009 — an international recognition for the cultural landscape with its scattered orchards, rolling hills, and near-natural managed forests. The annual Biosphärenfest is the central public event with which the Biosphere Reserve presents its work.

Walsheim as Host 2026

The festival moves to a different municipality in the Bliesgau each year. In 2026, Walsheim, a district of Gersheim, will be the host — the third stop in Gersheim since 2004. Walsheim is located on the southern edge of the Bliesgau, directly on the French border, and is an ideal venue for a festival that emphasizes the rural character of the reserve.

What You'll Experience

The program is focused on sustainability, regionality, and education:

  • Direct Marketers: Farmers, cheesemakers, bakers with regional products
  • Beekeepers and Oil Mills: Honey from the Bliesgau, walnut oil, hemp oil
  • Craftspeople: traditional and sustainable production
  • Three Biosphere Schools: Presentation of environmental education work
  • Nature Guides: Hikes through the scattered orchards, guided tours
  • Environmental Associations: BUND, NABU Saarland, Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park
  • Children's Program: Nature education, hands-on activities

Arrival as a Statement

The festival places particular emphasis on sustainable travel. Arrival by train to Kirkel followed by bus (lines 508 and 547 with increased frequency) is recommended. For car travelers, the organizers provide free shuttle buses between several parking lots and the festival grounds (9:15 AM to 7:00 PM, every 15 minutes). Guided bike tours start at 10 AM from Blieskastel, St. Ingbert, and Saarbrücken. A central bicycle parking area is set up on Goethestraße in Walsheim.

Sponsorship

The main sponsor is the Kreissparkasse Saarpfalz, which has supported the festival for years. The fact that a regional bank is the main partner of a sustainability festival says a lot about the commitment with which the Bliesgau cherishes its UNESCO designation.
