Brass music in a baroque setting

Gersheim is a municipality in the southernmost part of Saarland, right in the middle of the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve and only a few kilometers from the French border. In the heart of the town stands St. Alban church — and in this church, a special musical tradition unfolds every year in mid-December: the Advent concert of the Musikverein Gersheim.

Over 100 years of brass band tradition

The Musikverein Gersheim is one of the traditional brass orchestras in the Saarpfalz region. For generations, it has cultivated the tradition of concert brass music — from festive marches and classical arrangements to modern big band adaptations. The Advent concert focuses on a particularly festive program: baroque Christmas music, romantic song arrangements, classical and modern Advent songs, often supplemented by solo pieces by individual musicians.

The church as a concert hall

St. Alban church, with its excellent acoustics and baroque interior, lends the concert a special atmosphere. In the candlelight of Advent, surrounded by festive decorations, the brass music unfolds with an extraordinary sound — it is rare to experience brass bands in such a sacred setting.

More than just a concert

The Advent concert is a highlight in Gersheim's village life: the parish, the music association, and local clubs work together, and a large part of Gersheim's population gathers in the church. The concert has its firm place in the region's Advent calendar and attracts guests from the entire Saarpfalz district and the neighboring Lorraine region.

Bliesgau in Advent

Anyone visiting the concert should combine their stay with a visit to the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve. Even in winter, the hilly landscape with its extensive wildflower meadows, the Roman villa of Reinheim, and the nearby European Cultural Park offer exciting exploration. In Advent, the Bliesgau also features a Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market).
